Things are off and running for 2022; Washington added 6-4, 315 lb. defensive lineman Sir Mells to the commit list.
“I know it’s the best place for me”, Mells told Realdawg.com this week about the upcoming announcement of his decision, “The minute I got off the plane it felt like home…the fans, the coaches, it felt like home instantly.”
The trip to Seattle unofficially in November was all that was needed for Mells to be able to make a decision; he got the offer from the coaches on Thanksgiving, and he’d seen what he needed to see.
“This isn’t just for me, but also it’s for my mom — and I’m ready to make it happen (at Washington).”
The school, itself, was a big draw for Mells, but his relationship with Ikaika Malloe is also a big deal to him, “He was the only coach that talked to my family”, he said.
But the actual first interest from Washington came when Mells was spotted by Scott Huff while recruiting current Husky, Troy Fautanu. Huff later told Mells that he felt he had the size and ability to play college football.
On the field, Mells is exactly what Malloe likes to see out of a d-tackle; he’s quick-footed for his size and shows some nasty. He looks a little like a young DeMarco Farr, but bigger than Farr at this age.
He’s very powerful to opposing backfields and uses his hands well at the point of contact. On film you can see how well he disengages and throws offensive linemen out of the way.
Shawn White, who coaches and mentors players at Liberty said Mells is “a 6-3, 315 lb. fast human that makes plays outside the hashes. He is a penetrator that runs sideline to sideline; playing specifically for Coach Malloe will take Sir and his overall game to another level…he already passes the eye test and Coach Malloe will be able to shape him into a great…versatile defensive lineman.”
And the fact is that Mells comes from a championship team and knows how to, not only complete, but to win.
And right after Washington offered, Mario Cristobal came a-calling from Oregon.
“He started hitting me up right after they offered”, Mells said, but he told the Ducks he wasn’t interested.
Michigan also started showing up, but it was too late for both schools.
The COVID restrictions have prevented regular visits, whether official or unofficial, happening on campus, but Mells said as soon as the extended dead period is over, he knows where he’s headed, “I want to get back up there as soon as possible”, he said.
With this, the Huskies add another Liberty High School (Vegas) 2022 prospect to the fold; Mells joins teammate Germie Bernard on the class of 2022 roster.
