As fall camp has rolled on, head coach Kalen DeBoer has given fans plenty of reasons to be excited about his first season at the helm. The offense has been incredibly impressive so far during camp, and the edge rushers have been the stars of the defense. With new scheme tweaks coming on both sides of the ball, who are going to be some household names this fall?
Ja’Lynn Polk
There’s a lot to be excited about with the Husky passing attack in 2022. Wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard has done an excellent job coaching up his crew of “takers” as he calls them. The combination on the outside of Jalen McMillan and Rome Odunze has the potential to be the best in the Pac-12, and they’re going to command a lot of attention from opposing defenses.
Enter Ja’Lynn Polk. After transferring from Texas Tech prior to the 2021 season, Polk seemed like he was in line for a big role before he suffered a chest injury that kept him out for the majority of the season. With two uber-talented field stretchers on the outside, there’s a good chance he becomes the quarterback’s best friend on third down, and don’t be surprised if he finishes out the year as the team’s reception leader.
Devin Culp
With the trio of receivers commanding a lot of attention plus the new offensive scheme, the junior tight end is going to have a big opportunity to make a name for himself in 2022. He proved what kind of threat he could be in the passing game in 2021, putting together five catches for 81 yards against Cal, and six catches for 83 yards against Colorado. So far at summer camp, Culp has made at least one spectacular catch every day, and will be a legitimate threat in the red zone for DeBoer’s offense.
Troy Fautanu
Even though he started three games in 2021 and played in nine, Fautanu should still qualify for this list. Strength coach Ron McKeefery has turned around the strength and conditioning for the entire team, and the sophomore should be one of the biggest benefactors. Coming out of high school, he looked like an elite athlete along the offensive line, and it appears Fautanu will slot in at left tackle while Jaxson Kirkland sits out the first game because of his waiver from the NCAA. When Kirkland returns to action, Fautanu should slide inside to left guard, and he could make a name for himself on a national level in 2022.
Kuao Peihopa
Peihopa made a huge impact in the four games he played as a true freshman before sustaining a foot injury. Coming into 2022, the defensive tackle looks like he’s going to be a major part of the rotation up front early on with Ulumoo Ale and Faatui Tuitele working their way back from injuries. He plays with as much aggression as anyone in the conference, and with extended snaps, he could wreak havoc on the interior, especially with all the attention the Husky edge rushers are going to receive.
Dominique Hampton
Even though he’s the last player listed here, Hampton might’ve been the pick if I were to award just one breakout candidate. Playing as the HUSKY defender in the new defensive scheme, the junior is going to show how athletic and versatile he really is. During camp, he’s shown that he’s going to be asked to do a little bit of everything, as we’ve seen him blitzing off the edge, dropping into zone coverage, and playing man too. It also appears he’s going to have tons of opportunities to make a play on the football, as there have been multiple times throughout open practices where quarterbacks didn’t see him dropping into coverage, leading to interceptions and tipped balls. With as many opportunities as he might have to make a play on the football, he should be the betting favorite to lead the team in interceptions.
