Roman’s Mailbag: 2022 Summer Edition

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions for the mailbag! With the season right around the corner, it felt like a great time to crowdsource a bunch of questions, and I hope I was able to answer everything in its entirety.

I mulled over this question for way longer than I’d like to admit. As someone who’s totally fashion conscious and doesn’t just focus on his shoes, I would say purple or black. Black goes with everything and getting a little more purple with these uniforms seems to be the only gripe some people might have with the new (admittedly very nice) uniforms.

Offense: Jack Westover. I know earlier this week I said that Devin Culp is going to be a breakout player at the position, and while I stand by the statement, Westover is going to have a more significant role in Kalen DeBoer’s offense than people think. He’s going to be a consistent dump-off option who might not put up the most significant stat line every week, but will be able to move the chains whenever he’s needed.

Defense: Kris Moll. It seems like it’s only a matter of time until the transfer from the University of Alabama Birmingham puts it all together. Co-defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell has said that he fits right into the scheme, and makes a lot of tremendous plays, but is still learning the language of the defense. Once he gets the terminology down, he’s going to be a force.

Special teams: Drew Fowler. He’s been getting some run on defense so far this summer, and the walk-on linebacker could find his niche as a gunner this year.

1.5, the Oregon game feels like a lock for one of those times. If I had to bet, I’d take the over and say they also wear them against UCLA.

I think fans should expect a lot of production out of the RB1 spot. At Fresno State, there was a 1A/1B split that was pretty much 50/50, but that doesn’t seem like it’ll be the case. It feels like Cameron Davis and Wayne Taulapapa are going to be the two main backs in the mix. Since Davis has a little bit more of a skillset as a pass catcher, my money would be on him to get 65 percent of the snaps, with Taulapapa being his main spell, especially in short yardage situations. As far as numbers go, somewhere around 900 total yards and eight total touchdowns feels like a safe bet for the RB1.

While the scheme is going to be very helpful in a turnaround along the offensive line, the biggest difference is that cannot be ignored comes from strength coach Ron McKeefery and football performance nutrition director Ali VandenBerghe. They’ve completely transformed the bodies of all the players up front, which will result in a much better execution of the new scheme.

Along the defensive line, fans can breathe a sigh of relief that Ulumoo Ale’s injury wasn’t as severe as they first thought, but it does feel like there’s a lot of room for optimism at defensive tackle. If Faatui Tuitele can prove that he’s healthy early on, and either Jacob Bandes or Siaosi Finau can make a big leap forward, the Huskies will be running six deep up front, and that depth would make them one of the best defenses in the Pac-12.

While I can’t go into a ton of specifics on this recruitment or others, this is something that has happened before and will happen again. Fans can read into this however they’d like, but keep in mind that every recruitment is different.

Practice has not been a very good gauge of what the tempo is going to look like, as most of the live reps during sessions that were open to the media were formatted as two-minute drills with the ball moved to pre-determined spots on the field. However, in 2021 Fresno State was 27th in the country in plays run per game, averaging a total of 75.4, so one can assume that this is going to be a much faster-paced offense in 2022. Also  for what it’s worth, John Donovan’s offense ranked 112th out of 130 FBS teams in plays per game, running 65.8 (which still feels very high).
