Where Are The Former Washington QBs Who Transferred?

Once the envy of the college football world, the Washington Huskies had a loaded QB room with 4-star QBs Jacob Sirmon, Ethan Garbers, Colson Yankoff, Dylan Morris and 3-star Jake Haener–and 5-star Sam Huard getting waiting to join the squad.

Then 5-star Jacob Eason happened.

Quickly the room emptied of Sirmon, Garbers and Yankoff.  In Fall Camp of 2019, after Eason was named the starter Haener left the team, well.  After last season’s record-setting season under Michael Penix, 2021 signee Sam Huard transferred to Cal Polytechnic.  Here’s a look at what the former Washington QBs are up to now:

Sam Huard has been named captain of the Cal Polytechnic Mustangs ahead of their season opener September 2, against the University of San Diego.  Announcing him as the starter may simply be a formality.

After transferring this past winter, and being reunited with his Kennedy High School coach Sheldon Cross, the former 5-star QB looked to be the odds-on favorite to win the starting spot.

Throughout the spring Huard impressed, including completing 11 of 12 passes for 145 yards and a TD in the Mustangs’ Spring Game.

Meanwhile, at the University of Northern Colorado, former Washington QB  Jacob Sirmon, has locked-down the starting QB position, as well.  After a stint at Central Michigan, Sirmon has found a home and peace in Garden City, an hour north of Denver.

Both signal-callers were not just the top QBs in the State of Washington their senior years, but were top 10 QBs in the country.

Class of 2018 signee at Washington, Colson Yankoff is now a redshirt senior at UCLA but is now listed as a running back.  The former 4-star QB has participated in 23 games since 2020 but has not attempted a pass.  In 11 games last season he caught 7 passes for 51 yards and 2 TDs.

Also in Burbank is 2020 signee Ethan Garbers who left Washington in May of 2021.  In 18 games the past two seasons, the former 4-star QB completed 57 of 88 passing attempts for 599 yards with 4 TDs and 4 interceptions.  He will start for the Bruins against Costal Carolina.

However, the lowest-rated of the above listed QBs was Jake Haener, who signed with UW in 2017, is now in the pro ranks with the New Orleans Saints, having been drafted this past Spring.  A 3-star QB with few offers, Haener transferred to Fresno State in 2021 and played under Kalen DeBoer that year before DeBoer left for Washington.  Last season he started 10 games, missing 4 because of an injury.  He completed 252 of 350 yards with 20 TDs and 3 interceptions.

Haener, in his final collegiate game cemented himself in Husky lore defeating Washington State in the LA Bowl, 29-6.  However, it was his final throw of the night that was his best:

Between all of those QBs is Dylan Morris a member of the 2019 recruiting class.  He has started 15 games at Washington and is the current Washington Heisman-contending Michael Penix.  Morris stayed at Washington amid those flurries of departures, was the number 5 QB in the nation that year.
