Washington Women’s Basketball Grabs 11th-Straight Win with Victory Over Saint Mary’s

Another week, another win for Washington women’s basketball.

Saint Mary’s never stood a chance against UW, who held control of the game from the get-go to secure its 64-32 victory.

The Huskies (11-0, 1-0 Pac-12) swiftly backed the Gaels (4-7) into a corner, snatching a 26-8 lead by the time the first quarter was over. Washington’s offense and defense remained on point, with Freshman guard Chloe Briggs throwing up a three within the first seven seconds of the game.

The team went 11-17 from the field and forcing six turnovers from Saint Mary’s, and Briggs and junior forward Dalayah Daniels combined for 15 points.

Although the offensive shutdown slowed down a tad bit in the second quarter, UW was nonetheless able to put up 14 more points, while SMC managed only two buckets. The Huskies out-rebounded the Gaels 17-7 for the half.

Things remained steady throughout the third quarter, and while Washington took its foot off the gas in the fourth, five more points were all that were needed to cap off the win. Both Briggs and Daniels finished the afternoon with 14 points each, the former emerging as a weapon beyond the arc and the latter getting things done in the paint.

The team as a whole managed 41 rebounds and 16 assists, compared to SMC’s 29 and five.

Head coach Tina Langley has her players on a stable, upward trajectory, as UW has now shown it is able to beat teams with completely different backgrounds and styles of play. This will remain important going forward, with sophomore standout Elle Ladine still missing from the lineup.

With the dominating win the Huskies may move into the Top 25 setting up  a showdown between at 18th-ranked Louisville at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
