Scoutlook: Transfer Quarterback Will Rogers Should Return Leach-Era Productivity

The Washington Huskies found their probable starting quarterback for the 2024 season in Mississippi State transfer Will Rogers.

As the late Mike Leach’s Air Raid passer, Rogers put up gaudy numbers in 2021 and 2022.  However, he missed part of this past season due to injury so there was an obvious drop off in his overall stats. He will arrive on Montlake with one year of eligibility remaining.

Size and Physicality

At 6-2 and 215 pounds, Rogers has a strong enough physique to absorb most hits and agile enough to move within and manipulate the pocket.

Arm Strength

Will Rogers has the arm to make all of the throws required in DeBoer’s version of the Air Raid offense. He has great touch down the sidelines and put the ball in perfect perfect stride of his receivers.  His fastball has plenty of velocity where he can throw in the intermediate that he fits between corners and linebackers.

Style of Play

Rogers is the most similar to Michael Penix in the way he manipulates the pocket. He is a capable runner but works to give his receivers the most time to get open. At times he throws across his body and has the strength to get the ball to his receivers.

Scheme Fit

What makes Will Rogers well-suited for DeBoer’s scheme is the way he controls the offense with his arm. He is comfortable making decisions with the ball in his hands. He will make a great fit in the Washington offense as he commands the offense and is unafraid to put the ball in small windows.

RealDawg Projection

While it is impossible to expect the same production Husky fans saw from Penix, his moxie, guts, and talent will make the loss of Penix bearable. With Will Rogers under/behind center all of Washington’s goals will be attainable again next year.
