Washington has become a strong contender for Cali (Mater Dei) 5-star WR/LB, Bru McCoy. While McCoy holds 28 offers to date, he’s beginning to narrow the field to five, and has three schools he’s leaning into for visits.
“I haven’t gotten the exact date set up yet, but I’m visiting Washington for sure”, McCoy told Realdawg.com this weekend, “I’ve been talking to Coach Lubick a lot about it though.”
McCoy says he wants to take all five visits, and says he’s “locked” into visiting Washington, USC, and Texas. And most experts feel USC is in the driver’s seat for McCoy, to which he said, “I get why they think that because it’s right in my back yard — but there’s a lot more that factors in to where I will go. I’ve always kept the option of leaving the state open.”
McCoy went on to explain some of those factors, “There’s a saying that you have to love your position coach”, he said, “I have a great relationship with Coach Lubick and also with Coach Petersen. I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback about how they don’t just say stuff and then you get up there and find out it wasn’t true, they are genuine and mean what they say.”
McCoy was in Seattle a year ago and took an unofficial trip with his family, “It surprised me actually”, he said, “I had a good chance to get one on one talks with the coaches.”
He also knows guys like Sean McGrew, Keith Taylor, Terrell Bynum, and newcomer Austin Osborne. But the QB room at Washington has truly piqued his interest.
“That’s huge”, he said, “That’s one of the first boxes you want to check off if you’re a receiver.”
So that begs the question: Offense or defense?
Washington loves McCoy at either/or, and he’s reminiscient of Shaq Thompson, who was about the same size when he arrived on campus at Washington. McCoy is 6-3, 212 right now.
When Chris Petersen first arrived at Washington he utilized the versatility of Thompson; who had moved from safety to linebacker, and then when the running game was in trouble, Petersen used Thompson to run the ball. He wound up having 61 carries for 456 yards in one season (and that was only about half the season). He also was still playing linebacker and posted 51 solo tackles and 80 total tackles. So this staff knows how to get the most out of a two-way guy.
Enter McCoy.
With all the moaning and groaning today about Joe Ngata committing to Clemson, the coaches have likely known all along that McCoy could contribute as a receiver if he were to wind up at Washington. But if you look at the network’s profiles, you wouldn’t even know that Washington is in play — but they are.
“Right now I’m taking a summer class so I can graduate midyear”, McCoy said, “So I’ll sign in December and just make a decision after my visits.”
He isn’t sure of who will get the other two visits right now, but Oklahoma could be one.
McCoy, who’s nickname “Bru” comes from another nickname “Bruiser”, is actually named Horace — after his father and grandfather.
