The return of Edefuan Ulofoshio

The return of Edefuan Ulofoshio

After being spotted in pads during practice on Halloween, before he gave Rome Odunze a… let’s just say controversial take on the best Halloween candy (which will be addressed later, along with a correct top 5 Halloween candy list), it seems like the return of arguably Washington’s best linebacker is imminent. So obviously that poses the question, what does that mean for the rest of the defense?

Against the run, the Huskies are among the nation’s elite, currently ranked 21st in the country allowing a little under 3.3 yards per carry, and 110.4 yards per game on the ground. Having an extra body, especially a player of Ulofoshio’s caliber won’t hurt. One of the smartest players on the team, Ulofoshio always knows his run fits, and rarely lets a ball carrier escape his grasp.

Where Ulofoshio really is going to make an impact though is against the pass. While he doesn’t play cornerback, he’s the perfect player to complement the defensive scheme when opposing quarterbacks drop back. He’s athletic enough to spy on quarterbacks who like to get out of the pocket, and rush the passer when needed.

However, one of the biggest things the junior linebacker can do in the scheme is cover tight ends and running backs. He can turn and run with them in man coverage when asked, he can sit in a zone in the middle of the field, and most importantly, cover the flat. Ulofoshio is no stranger to lining up on the edge, and not taking away an opposing team’s running back in the passing game is one of the big reasons the Huskies lost to Arizona State. Having Ulofoshio standing in what has been a free seven or eight yards for opposing offenses will be huge for the defense down the stretch.

It’s important to note that while Ulofoshio wasn’t listed on the official depth chart before Friday’s matchup with Oregon State, those depth charts are written in pencil. As Mike Vorel of the Seattle Times pointed out, cornerback Mishael Powell wasn’t listed on the depth chart before the Cal game, and still played a majority of the game.

Now, for the important stuff… in the video above, Ulofoshio said his favorite Halloween candy was Gushers. While he did acknowledge that they aren’t candy, that horrendous take can’t go unnoticed. Head coach Kalen DeBoer and co-defensive coordinator William Inge both also deserve credit for their choice, the correct choice, Twix. Below is the correct top five candy list:

  1. Twix
  2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  3. Kit Kat
  4. Hershey’s Special Dark (dark chocolate is infinitely superior to milk chocolate)
  5. 3 Musketeer’s
