Scoutlook: Washington’s 4-Star Receiver Commit Will Be Electric in Purple Reign

The Washington Huskies secured two receivers on Saturday on their big recruiting weekend, 4-star Jason Robinson and 3-star Justice Williams.  The former hails from Long Beach, California, and plays for Long Beach Poly.  He was convinced that the offensive system on Montlake would pair well with his skill set and it clearly does.

Trevor Mueller takes a look at why this electric playmaker was targeted by JaMarcus Shephard:

Size:  The two-time Max Preps All-American receiver stands at 5-11.5 and 160 pounds.  That isn’t the size that the Huskies have been pulling in, but he appears to have bigger, softer hands than many his size.

Speed:  Robinson’s speed is electric.  His initial burst is impressive but how he explodes out of his breaks to create separation may be his best asset.  When teams give him a cushion on deep routes he quickly gobbles up the extra space or uses the space to his advantage by sitting in a soft spot.

Footwork: Robinson’s footwork is his most impressive attribute. His route running and ability to stop and start are why he has shot up the recruiting rankings. Paired with his speed Robinson is a very tough cover. He is a master at disguising his moves and forcing defenders into gambles.

Catch Radius: Robinson’s highlights show off his ability to reach out in front or behind with one hand to make a reception. He is capable of contorting his body in the air to turn low-percentage throws into completions.

Route Savviness:  Normally we’d call this football IQ, however, Robinson is a savvy route runner who understands how to set up defenders.  He understands the subtleness of each move and how to put a defender in an awkward position to give himself extra separation.  He doesn’t just go out and run the fastest route but judiciously uses his burst to throw defenders off the scent.

Scoutlook: Jason Robinson is a receiver that is the foundation of an elite receiver room. His footwork and ability to run any route on the tree make him extremely valuable. He is just as likely to move the sticks as he is to make a circus catch over his shoulder.  As he gets into the program and continues to improve in other areas he could become a major contributor. His attention to his footwork makes him a potential star.
