Opponent First-Look: The Oregon State Beavers

2018 Season Recap:

2 wins 10 losses

Coming into the 2018 season expectations were not high for Jonathan Smith’s first year as head coach. The Beavers started the 2018 season having to travel to #5 Ohio St. The Buckeyes put up over 700 yards of offense beating the Beavers 77-31. Week 2 Oregon State matches up with an easier opponent in Southern Utah. The Beavers were able to hold on to win 48-25 but allowed 488 yards of offense to a FCS school. The defense continued to struggle most of the season as the Beavers allowed 35+ points in every game the rest of the year. After beating Southern Utah the Beavers lost their next 5 games Nevada, Arizona, Arizona St., Washington St., and Cal before beating Colorado 41-34 in overtime week 8.

Oregon State would lose their next two games to USC 38-21 and to Stanford 48-17 before traveling to Seattle for the week 11 matchup with the Huskies. Uw would win that game 42-23 behind a strong running game, Myles Gaskin ran for 135 1 TD and Salvon Ahmed ran for 76 and 2 TDs. Jake Browning also had a good game 17-23 242 yards and 3 TDs. Jermar Jefferson had a good game for the Beavers with 19 carries for 115 yards. The Beavers would finish their season the next week at 2-10 after losing 55-15 to Oregon.

Jake Luton, Jermar Jefferson, and Isaiah Hodges were bright spots and a bad 2018 season for the Beavers. Jermar Jefferson ran for 1400 yards and 14 touchdowns as a Freshman and gave Beaver fans something to look forward to. The Beavers were held back by one of the worst defenses in the whole country. The defense allowed over 45 points a game, only had 15 sacks on the season, and only forced 8 turnovers, while allowing opponents to convert over 50% of third downs. The 2019 Beavers will be better than 2018 with most of their offense returning and a defense that couldn’t possibly be as bad as 2018.

2018 Offense: 26.1 points per game, 2,990 passing yards, 1,867 rushing yards, 17 passing touchdowns, 23 rushing touchdowns

Results:

Coming into 2019 there were low expectations for the Beavers as they were picked to finish at the bottom of the Pac 12 — but they couldn’t be worse than 2018. Oregon State started the season at home against Oklahoma State, losing 52-36. The Beavers fell behind early and were never able to catch Oklahoma State as Chuba Hubbard ran for 221 yards 3 TD for the Cowboys. Week 2 the Beavers played at Hawaii, they took the lead 28-21 in the first half, but were unable to score in the second half and lost 31-28. Jermar Jefferson had a big game for the Beavers running for 183 yards and a touchdown.

Oregon State played Cal Poly week 3, Jake Luton threw for 255 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Beavers won 45-7. The next week Jake Luton had another good game throwing for 337 yards 1 touchdown and Isaiah Hodgins had 10 catches 162 yards 1 TD but the Beavers lost to Stanford 31-28. At 1-3 Oregon State travelled to play at UCLA, the Bruins ran for 250 yards 3 TDs but Jake Luton and Isaiah Hodgins carried the Beavers to victory. Hodgins had 10 catches for 123 yards and caught 3 of Jake Luton’s 5 touchdown passes.

Week 6 Oregon State hosted Utah, the Utes shut down Oregon State’s offense holding them to only 200 yards of total offense and winning 52-7. The last two weeks Oregon State has played their best football going on the road to beat both Cal and Arizona. At Cal the Beavers played their best game of the year defensively holding the Golden Bears to 17 points. Against Arizona State the Beavers played their best game of the year so far offensively Jake Luton threw for 328 yards 3 TDs, Isaiah Hodgins had 7 catches for 150 yards 2 TDs, Jermar Jefferson ran for 107 yards and 3 TDs. The Beavers had 570 yards of total offense as they won 56-38.

Oregon State is 4-4 so far this season, 3-2 in the Pac-12. Jake Luton has started every game this season at QB and has had a solid season with 1930 yards 19 TDs and only 1 interception. Jermar Jefferson came into the season as the starting RB but has missed time with injury, he is healthy now and had his best game last week. Jefferson has 400 yards and 4 TDs on the season and backup RB Artavis Pierce has played well in his absence amassing 697 yards and 6 TDs. Isaiah Hodgins has been one of the best WRs in the Pac 12 with 63 catches for 895 yards 12 touchdowns. The Beavers aren’t very deep at receiver though, Hodgins is responsible for over 40% of their receiving production. Defensively, although the beavers are considerably better than last year they are still one of the bottom teams in the Pac 12 allowing over 32 points per game. The Huskies should have no problem being able to score enough points to beat the Beavers as long as they don’t hurt themselves with turnovers.
