Offense Grades: Washington’s Offensive Looks Like Best in Nation

Once again the Washington Huskies had their hand wrapped up by halftime.  in fact, UW had 14 points on the board before quarterback Michael Penix made an appearance.

UW’s latest victim being the California Golden Bears who went to the locker room down 45-12 with no answer in any of the three phases of the game.

The Huskies bludgeoned Cal with a Pick-6 and a punt return touchdown all before Michael Penix and the offense took a snap.

The offense was extremely efficient, solidifying themselves as the best offense in the country.

here are our offensive grades:

Quarterback

Michael Penix was fantastic. He completed 76-percent of his attempts and looked really good doing it. He was putting balls in small windows and letting his receivers make plays.

Of his six incompletions on the day two stood out. Obviously the interception was not good. His mechanics were off leading to a rare duck fluttering out of his hand. The other was a throw to the sideline where he was looking to Ja’Lynn Polk and missed wide left. Other than that he was spectacular.

Grade: A-

Running Backs

Dillon Johnson is perfect for this offense. He is the most complete back on this roster. He is patient waiting for the running lanes and violent at the point of contact.

Johnson didn’t get a ton of touches but did the most with every one averaging 6.6 yards a carry.

Will Nixon continues to be very solid with the touches he gets. The question around the running game has been answered.

Grade: A

Receivers

It was a two man show for the “competitive” part of the game. Ja’Lynn Polk and Rome Odunze were unbelievable.

Polk led the team in receptions 8 for 127 and two touchdowns. His first score of the day was an impressive grab in the corner of the end zone where he showed off his incredible hands as he finished the reception. What else can one say about Rome Odunze?

Add a punt return touchdown to his 5 catch 125 yards and two touchdown day. Odunze is second in the country with 544 receiving yards, 4 touchdowns through the air, a rushing, and a punt return?

Maybe we will see him in New York at the end of the year.

Grade: A

Tight End

A week after three first-half Jack Westover TDs this position group was relatively quiet on the day as pass-catchers. Devin Culp and Westover each had one catch.

Just like last week there will be games where someone in this room will be asked to make a big impact as a receiver, tonight was not that night.

All four tight ends saw time in the first half often being available for check downs, but more importantly they helped in pass-protection. Penix was virtually untouched.

Grade: A

Offensive Line

The line was down another starter with Julius Buelow on the sidelines with a walking boot.

Geirean Hatchett made his first start of his career and fit in seamlessly. Michael Penix stayed upright and the team averaged a first down an attempt. Scott Huff is undefeated.
