Listen to an Interview with Scott Hedgcock of Montlake Players

The world of NIL (name, image, and likeness) has changed the makeup of college sports.

Every athlete in college sports has the opportunity to earn money while in school. This is a massive change from the old way of college athletics where athlete could scarcely have a job due to the NCAA rules.

As of now the NIL landscape from school to school varies in many ways. The laws around the rollout have been vague and many schools are taking a wait and see approach. Much like the wild west, there really isn’t many laws that have teeth.

In steps Montlake Players. This LLC created by Scott Hedgcock and former player Chase Skuza.

Hedgcock, a Washington alum, is a lead advisor at Aletheian, a wealth management company. After bringing on former Husky players Cameron Van Winkle and Lavon Coleman, Hedgcock opened up an internship for current football players to learn financial literacy.

His vision was to empower the student athlete with the intrinsic skills learned on the field; attention to detail, punctuality, teamwork, flexibility, etc. but also look to add value to the work force.

One skill that each football player brings is a wealth of knowledge of the game of football. Montlake players gives student athletes the ability to make money by adding value to local communities through running youth football camps.

The players not only have the opportunity to not only run the camp, but are educated about the other organizational pieces that going into running camps (insurance, field rentals, etc.).

While other NIL organizations such as Montlake Futures play a key role in helping the university navigating the new frontier, Montlake Players is another key piece to empowering and financially benefitting the Husky athletes.
