Washington landed the big fish. JaMarcus Shephard is Washington’s new wide receivers coach, along with being named the team’s associate head coach and passing game coordinator. Arguably the best wide receivers coach in the country on the field, he’s an excellent recruiter too. Now that the Huskies have their guy, who should be his first wave of targets?
4-star WR Ashton Cozart, Marcus (Texas)
Cozart is originally from the state of Washington, and has been very vocal about wanting an offer from his hometown school for a very long time. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb finally delivered that offer on Tuesday, and now it’s up to Shephard to seal the deal. Cozart blew up on the national scene, earning offers from Oklahoma, Florida, and Alabama. Shephard was a great recruiter at Purdue, now the question is, can he carry that success over to Washington? Securing an early commitment from Cozart would be huge for the class of 2023, and he would probably end up taking over as the lead peer recruiter, as he’s demonstrated on numerous occasions that he has a lot of passion for the program.
4-star WR Bryson Rogers, Wiregrass Ranch (Florida)
Courtney Morgan is doing everything he can to expand Washington’s recruiting footprint. One of his most recent attempts to do that was offering Rogers, who told Realdawg he’s considering taking a visit to Washington. Shephard has an impressive resume, touting two Big Ten Freshmen of the Year, a consensus true freshman All-American, and a second-round draft pick under his belt. With his resume plus Kalen DeBoer’s offense, the Huskies have an opportunity to expand their footprint in a major way.
4-star WR Rico Flores, Folsom (Calif.)
One of the biggest fish within reach, the Huskies need to make a serious run at Flores. Depth is seriously needed in the wide receivers room after multiple transfers from the program, so why not go toe to toe with Lincoln Riley right away? Show the conference that you aren’t afraid to invade California, and go right for Reily’s throat. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, so hit California hard, and show Flores why Washington is the best program for him.
