Impact Statement: Washington Loses 3-Star 2024 QB Commit After Visit to Texas A&M

Washington quarterback commit, EJ Caminong has announced his decommitment from Washington this evening.  A 3-star signal caller from Garfield High School in Seattle leaves Washington with just two commits heading into the two most important recruiting weekends.  The two remaining commits are Caminong’s close friend 3-star receiver Landon Bell from Las Vegas and 4-star offensive lineman Paki Finau from Hesperia, California.

Caminong had softened his commitment since a visit to Oregon State earlier this spring, while verbally reaffirming his commitment to UW.  After his visit to Corvallis, the Huskies turned around and offered 3-star QB Dermaricus Davis of Etiwanda High in Rancho Cucamonga, California.  Davis will visit Washington on June 24th.

While both Caminong and Davis are rated 3-stars, Davis’ star has been on the rise.  With Power 5 offers from Arizona, Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State, he has been rated a high 3-star and number 22 QB in the nation by On3 and an upper 3-star but QB number forty-five by 247Sports.

Caminong, while picking up offers from Texas A&M, Oregon State, and Cal in recent months, his stock has also climbed some since he’s been taking more visits.  However, he’s fallen from a top 12 QB to number 37 by 247Sports industry composite.

The 6-2, 195-pound Garfield High QB was a bit surprised by the Huskies offering Davis.  But Caminong was shocked when he was leap-frogged when the Huskies signed 2024 QB from Folsom, California, Austin Mack who then reclassified to the class of 2023 and will be on campus this month.

However, under previous Washington coaches a scholarship would have been pulled if a player had visited another school.  Plain and simple.   The Huskies were a bit lenient with Caminong, but also softened on him, turning around and offering Davis.

On film, Davis appears to be a bit more accurate on intermediate routes than Caminong but Caminong has a beautiful deep ball and the knack to throw receivers open.  Both will be excellent college QBs.

Washington is in decent shape this year at QB with Michael Penix in his final year.  He’s followed by recent UW graduate Dylan Morris.  Then there’s promising Santa Barbara City College transfer Alex Johnson (originally from Bishop Blanchett), Austin Mack, and whoever signs for 2024.  There’s also a possibility that should former Husky QB Sam Huard who is now at Cal Poly, could graduate and return to Seattle as a grad transfer with immediate eligibility.  As things sit right now, here’s a look at the scholarship distribution for Washington QBs.

Senior, Michael Penix, 6-foot-3, 216 pounds

Junior, Dylan Morris, 6-0, 202

Junior, Alex Johnson, 6-6, 214

Freshman, Austin Mack, 6-6, 210

It seems probable that Washington will add 2 QBs this cycle; one high schooler and one from the Transfer Portal.

RealDawg.com will continue our look at Washington’s big recruiting weekend tomorrow with a profile of the players coming this weekend.
