Huskies Dominate Game One of Italy Tour with 94-35 Victory

ROME, Italy – Five Huskies scored in double figures to kick off Washington’s foreign tour in Italy on Thursday as the Dawgs defeated the Peak Warriors 94-35 at Centro Sportivo Tellene in Rome. Washington’s game was the first of four it will be playing against Italian pro teams during it’s 10-day tour between Rome and Florence.

Junior Nahziah Carter led UW with a team-high 18 points and added five rebounds while both freshman Isaiah Stewart and redshirt freshman Nate Roberts each contributed 16 points apiece. Roberts nearly had a double-double as he pulled down a team-high nine rebounds with Stewart grabbing seven himself.

Additionally, sophomore Jamal Bey scored 12 points while freshman Marcus Tsohonis had 11. Leading the team in assists was sophomore Elijah Hardy who recorded eight on the night.

The Huskies put their foot on the pedal from the first whistle taking a 21-0 lead before allowing the Warriors to score at the 2-minute mark in the first quarter. Carter led the charge in that 21-0 run as he scored 11 of his 18 points in the first six minutes before ending the quarter with UW up 32-3.

Washington continued to dominate thanks to steals and breakaway transition baskets along with the stifling 2-3 zone taking effect. At the half Washington was up 54-14. More runs for the Dawgs continued in the third quarter as the Huskies only allowed five points to go up 82-19. Playing the full bench of eligible players, the Dawgs went on to take a 94-35 victory with 10 of the 15 players who saw action scoring at least two points.

Washington was without senior Sam Timmins and junior Quin Barnard, who are not eligible to play due to having already competed in one foreign tour, Quade Green and J’Raan Brooks, who are still out due to transfer rules, and freshman Jaden McDaniels who did not make the trip to Italy due to personal matters.

“It was fun to see all the players out there doing what they do best tonight,” said junior Nahziah Carter. “It was good to get everyone out there together against another team instead of just going up against each other and start to see how this team can develop. We aren’t even close to being where we are going to get to yet but it was fun to just be back in competition and get things going.”

Washington returns to action on Friday, August 15 to face another Roman select team at 11 a.m. PT at the same venue with the game being streamed on FloHoops.com. Along with their first game, the Huskies have been taking in the cultural experience of being in Italy having done tours at the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and taking part in Gladiator School. Prior to Friday’s game, the Dawgs will do a tour of the Vatican.
