The journey continues to get longer for local 5-star wideout, Emeka Egbuka. But what started out as a top four, is now a top three.
Egbuka, who’s 6-1, 195, narrowed his list to four schools several months ago; Washington, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Clemson. Since then one school has fallen by the way.
“Not really”, he said when asked if the Tigers are still in the mix, “They stopped contacting me…I’m going to keep it those three.”
While some had felt that Egbuka would include Oregon in his final cut, instead Oklahoma came in as the seeming dark horse, but the Sooners picked up a lot of steam when they landed one of the top quarterbacks in the country — but so did Washington.
Ohio State is also considered a strong lean by most analysts, but Egbuka feels that more is made of this then there needs to be — even to the point of silent commit rumors.
“I have no idea where that comes from”, he laughed, “JT and I both have no idea. I don’t know where I’m going yet and nothing has been decided.”
And the reason things are plodding along at, what seems to be, a snail’s pace for Egbuka has to do with this never-ending dead period in recruiting. If not for that he might have had a decision by this time. But one thing about Egbuka is that he was never going to make any decision until he saw each of the schools on his list.
He’s seen Washington many times, and Ohio State, and even got to check out Clemson — but not Oklahoma.
In fact, the last time he was scheduled to go to Norman there was a COVID outbreak and he wound up cancelling the trip with the plan to return once the restrictions were lifted in the fall.
But the fall came and went and nothing has changed.
“I’m still just waiting for any available weekend to go see Oklahoma”, he said, adding that he may just have to go see the campus and the town without being able to visit with the coaches.
This is just not a guy who’s going to reach any final conclusion until he’s checked off every box.
Egbuka told us he has no plans to return to Ohio State, and of course Washington is still close by.
He watched the Huskies play on TV Saturday night against Oregon State, “I thought they looked good”, he said, “Dylan (Morris) is a great quarterback and they did what they needed to do to win.”
Egbuka continues to stay in regular contact with Junior Adams as well, “I just talked to him today”, he said, “He was just checking in on me …we talk everyday now.”
And of course, the future Husky QB also continues to be in regular contact with Egbuka, “Sam and me talk pretty much all the time”, he said.
One bright spot now for Egbuka, however, is the fact that he won’t have to wait until February to hit the field for Steilacoom, “I was bummed about that”, he said, “But now we might only have to wait until January.”
Originally, Egbuka had talked about enrolling early at whichever school he chooses, but now “I’m just not sure about anything”, he said.
This is definitely “on hold”, as he put it, but the Huskies are still in a real good spot for this elite receiver. And just as the “experts” assumed Oregon would make is final four, don’t assume they know where he’s leaning right now either.
They don’t.
