WOOF: La Habra TE, Mason West is a Husky

It didn’t take too long for La Habra, CA. tight end, Mason West to decide where he wanted to continue his football career and education. The Huskies offered on Friday, and West pulled the trigger today.

Realdawg.com spoke with West earlier this week while he was still on the verge of the offer from Chris Petersen, and he said then “I’m thinking about making my commitment.”

Well, again — that didn’t take long. Among the reasons West listed, one of the biggest was Jordan Paopao.

“Coach Pao…he’s from Oceanside and we have the same vibe. He’s just a great guy and we’ve had good talks about their plans for me.”

Also on that list is Coach Pete, himself, “He’s a great leader”, West added, “I’d want to play for someone like him…Built for Life is cool and they set you up for life after football and getting to go for every opportunity.”

It’s not the first time Washington has pulled a recruit out of La Habra; Greg Gaines is a La Habra alum and West is well-familiar with the former Husky, “He came to one of our practices last spring”, he said, “He’s a big dude.”

What the Huskies are getting with West is a very solid tight end who says “I’m more of a catching tight end right now than a blocking tight end”, but he also is a good blocking tight end.

One scout said he’s similar to Bradley Archer, a 2019 tight end who Washington recruited, but wound up signing with Stanford. But on film it stands out that West is more athletic.

So now Washington has two tight ends in the class of 2020, and it’s likely they will continue to pursue a third, but the combo of 4-star tight end Mark Redman and now West, is a good two-fer regardless.

We have more quotes from West in his offer article from Friday  and we do anticipate talking more to West about his decision later today.

One question that has come up is whether or not West will be an early enrollee, but right now he said he won’t be.

Here’s the West File:

* 6-4, 240
* La Habra High School (same as former DL Greg Gaines)
* Scouted by Washington both in the spring and at the camp at Whittier.
* Has family in Seattle area.
* Wants to major in Environmental Engineering
