WOOF: Huskies Reel in 4-Star DB, Jacobe Covington

The Huskies are rolling with recruiting today, as Saguaro High School in Arizona has (once again) has been good to UW. Four-star safety, Jacobe Covington has committed to Washington.

There were earlier rumors that Covington was a silent commit to the Huskies, but these were shot down by most close to him. Covington had taken his official trip to Washington back in June, but he had also taken a visit to Oklahoma as well. And then he announced he would commit on October 1st, but then announced he would be visiting Texas A&M in September.

His next move was to tweet out “Change of plans” on that October 1st announcement — and most assumed this meant he would delay his decision, when in fact, he planned to announce sooner.

So, today it’s over — and Washington beat the Sooners (again) on a coveted target and also dipped into the well at Saguaro for one of the top three defensive backs in the country.

“He’s been talking to me since last year”, Covington said of Jimmy Lake, “They have a history of getting DB’s to the next level”.

Covington has a great deal of admiration for Saguaro alum and former Husky Byron Murphy, and he also has a friendship with current Husky DB, Dominique Hampton.

“I talked to him a lot and asked him how it was where”, he said, “He’s always said nothing but good things (about Washington).”

Covington’s mother, Katrina was alongside him when he took the trip to UW, and she’s very excited about her son’s decision. And at the end of the day it came down to…

“how the culture and how the team, staff included, support each other as family…I believe…UW checks the boxes in these areas.”

Right now, Washington likes Covington at safety and nickel — he’s a long athlete (6-1, 195) and he’s very physical and athletic. Covington has great hips and coverage skills – he can play both positions in the secondary but he’s a thumper who hits hard and loves contact. Just the kind of guy that Lake and Will Harris like in their arsenal.

Covington is also a very smart player who does a solid job at reading offenses.
