It was nearly a year ago that Utah (East) defensive lineman, Voi Tunuufi received news that he had been offered by the Huskies, and today he put a call in to Ikaika Malloe to tell him he was ready to accept that offer.
“I committed earlier today”, the 6-2, 280 lb. Utah prospect told Realdawg.com Sunday afternoon, “He (Coach Malloe) told me he has a lot of respect for me (making an early decision) and we had created that bond…I had been thinking about it and decided to take a few days before (committing).”
Tunuufi is a special player; he’s quick and athletic and also has played running back at times for East High School. He’s a leader both verbally and also by example and is just flat out strong. Tunuufi is also a guy who can move around and create mismatches, but also strong enough to play zero too.
Last season he recorded 21 sacks, “I don’t know how many tackles I had though”, Tunuufi said.
“Coach Malloe has been there for me since my freshman year”, he explained, “He’s taken care of the boys from my high school and shown a lot of love — Washington is unmatched in how much they support the Poly culture.”
Ikaika Malloe is doing a tremendous job early on for 2021; he’s just received a commitment from Hawai’i prospect, Kuao Peihopa (last week) and now he’s 2-2 in reeling in Tunuufi. Both were offered early, although Tunuufi hasn’t yet been on the UW campus.
“I was supposed to come up (in May) but with the quarantine I’ll have to wait”, he said, but that doesn’t matter; he knows what UW is all about and there’s not going to be any wavering in this pledge.
Tunuufi, who’s Samoan, lives with his coach Brandon Mattich and so he has access to a bench wrack to work out and has also spent some time going to parks and open fields to work on staying in shape.
With this, Washington may be done with their interior line recruiting for 2021.
