When the Good Lord has a plan, you don’t question it. It’s meant to be. Once those pieces fall into place, the rest is…well, history-in-the-making.
Junior Adams made a very early offer to one of the top receivers in the country way back in the fall, and today, Germie Bernard of Liberty High School in Nevada has announced he will be a Husky.
It seems only fitting that Bernard is the first to commit to the Class of 2022, since he was the first receiver to be offered when he unofficially visited Washington last September.
“I really feel like that’s special”, he said, noting that Washington was one of the first schools to seriously recruit him, “All through this recruiting process…Washington would make the effort throughout their day”, Bernard explained, “They would tell my coach to have me call them, and so they were the only school that really made the effort for me to talk to them.”
Some would worry about whether or not Bernard can stay solid throughout the next two years, but he is resolute in this decision and has a plan in place if other schools keep coming at him.
“I’d want (coaches) to respect my decision..I’d like Coach White to help me out — like if any coaches wanted to talk to me he’d tell them that my recruitment is shut down”, he explained.
And speaking of his receivers coach, Shawn White, Bernard talked about the bond and influence this man has had in his life as a player and teacher.
“He improved my game a lot. Coming here from my freshman year to my sophomore year, there really is a totally big difference because of Coach White. He taught me a lot of new things, not just football but outside of football too — he really influenced me.”
The next step in the journey will be when Junior Adams and Jimmy Lake take over, “The bond I have with Coach White, I feel like I’m building with Coach Adams. I’ve known (Coach Lake) for awhile now — we’ve had a good relationship.”
Bernard said his family is very excited for him to take that next step as well.
“They think it was a good decision”, Bernard said of his parents, Ray and Nicole Bernard (pictured), noting that both were “amazed” at how the campus looked and how supportive the Husky coaches were when they were in Seattle last fall, “They really love my decision.”
But there’s one guy who’s especially loving this move by Bernard, and that’s his FSP teammate, Sam Huard.
“We met at Mesquite when I played with him for FSP, that was the first time meeting, and then we talked a little bit. And then a little after that he text me on Instagram and we started talking more — and then when he found out I committed we started texting more so that when we do come in, we already have a bond built.”
In fact, Huard gave us his own scouting report on Bernard, “He’s a big, fast, and strong wide receiver with great hands”, Huard told Realdawg.com, “Definitely going to help us go win a National Championship and I’m really excited to be able to go play with him again”.
Bernard concurs that Washington can complete for the title while he’s there, “For sure”, he said, “They have all the right pieces in the right spots to do what they’re supposed to do and win it”.
Bernard is also still growing; “I’ll get (maybe) to 6-4, but the doctor says 6-5”, he said.
In the meantime, Bernard and his teammates Of course, want to repeat their state title run from 2019, and as for personal goals, he said one is to break 1000 yards, “And to beat the school record for most touchdowns in a game.”
