He wanted to wait until his sister’s 19th birthday today to announce, but this decision was made a month ago for Oakley, CA (Freedom) safety, Vince Nunley.
The 6-1 1/2, 190 lb. safety is now a member of the Class of 2021.
“It was really after I took the virtual tour”, Nunley said of what tipped the scales for Washington, “But my relationship with the staff has been building over time.”
“I most definitely think Coach Harris will coach me up”, Nunley added, saying he was “shocked but not surprised to see the news about Buddha Baker’s contract in the news recently, “I know they’re going to get me to the next level.”
Nunley chose the Huskies over 10 other suitors, and would likely have seen his stock continue to rise, but he’s resolute in his decision, and his family, including older sister, Mariah, are completely on board with him heading to Seattle for college.
“My family had total support for me wherever I chose to go”, he said.
“I’ve been up there twice before”, Nunley said, adding that he had attended 7-on-7 tourneys, and he knows several guys through that circuit already committed to the Huskies.
But one thing really impressed Nunley about Washington is the fact that the head coach, Jimmy Lake, knows a thing or two about DB’s, “That definitely had an impact on for me”, Nunley said, “It’s a real bonus.”
On the field Nunley is a lengthy defensive back who hits like a brick and can cover both sides of the field. Last season he posted 35 tackles and eight picks; two to the house.
He has strong instincts and has a knack for reading the QB and knowing when to attack at the line of scrimmage. He’s been listed as a corner but Washington likes him at safety.
With this, Washington may be done with defensive back recruiting for the year, but never say never.
Nunley is a three-star, but with his size and skillset, there’s no question he will be a Sunday player.
