Despite a leaky internet the last few days, today Carlsbad, CA. 4-star safety, Asa Turner made it official and announced he has committed to Washington tonight and the “Woof” is in.
Turner, who’s 6-4, 215, kept in touch with Realdawg.com throughout the week as the news of his commitment came out prematurely.
It was reported that he had committed to Washington via Twitter by his coach at Carlsbad. Greg Biggins of 247Sports learned of the commitment from the coach, as well, and then the Tweet on the Carlsbad Twitter page was removed, but the toothpaste couldn’t be put back in the tube at that point.
While his coach acknowledged that Turner didn’t want it reported until all the coaches who had been recruiting him had been notified, Biggins continued to run with the story regardless.
As of yestereday, there was still no official announcement from Turner, himself, and no “Woof” from Coach Petersen on Twitter.
But today is Friday the 13th, and what better day to announce your decision?
“It just so happens he was born on a Friday the 13th and 13 has been our lucky number ever since”, Turner’s mother, Diane told Realdawg.com this week.
Turner, who’s 6-4, 205 right now, told us about the decision, “I just felt the most the comfortable there when I was on my visit”, he said, “I have a great relationship with the coaching staff and it just felt right (on the visit). I’ve known this staff for three years now.”
Another big part of the decision is because of the development Turner can get from Jimmy Lake, and the fact that there’s a place ready for him, “I know that Jojo McIntosh is graduating and Taylor Rapp is probably going to the NFL, so I have a shot at coming and competiting right away.”
What are the Huskies getting with Turner? He’s a guy we like to call the “new enforcer” at the safety position for Washington.
Indeed, consider the fact that Jojo McIntosh, the guy who folded Royce Freeman like a Walmart deck chair at Autzen Stadium two years ago, is a senior. Washington will need a guy who can come in and lay the thump just like McIntosh.
Washington needed two solid safeties in this class because of the loss of McIntosh in 2019 and, as Turner pointed out, the early departure of Taylor Rapp.
Enter Turner and Cameron Williams.
Williams is announcing his decision on the 25th and it’s looking real good for Washington. Now, with Turner on board, those safety needs are beginning to be filled in the class 2019.
Turner is physically capable of becoming “that guy” for Washington — he is strong in the secondary, but having played receiver, he also has offensive instincts that will help him read plays as they develop and react accordingly.
“Jimmy Lake is a big part of my decision”, Turner said, “He will come see me play when they go play UCLA and I might get up there for the ASU game because we have a bye that weekend.
Turner will be signing in December, as well. He is going to take part in a 7 on 7 tourney over the weekend in California, and then he’s going to be getting ready for his own season to start at Carlsbad.
His older brother, Dakota just finished up his collegiate career at San Diego State, and his sister is a graduate of Cal-Berkeley. Turner grew up in Hawai’i, but his family moved to the mainland when his older two siblings began their college careers in California.
This is a terrific pick up for the Huskies — and Jimmy Lake beat out Notre Dame again. The Irish were thought to have had the inside track on Turner, but the Huskies won another defensive back recruiting battle. Last year they beat the Irish out for Kyler Gordon and Julius Irvin.
