Week 1 was filled with plenty of drama from Colorado shocking last season’s number 2 team in the country Saturday morning, to number 8 Florida State dismantling number 5 LSU Sunday, to unranked Duke knocking off Clemson Monday night. There will certainly be some big moves when the AP and the Coaches Poll are released Tuesday morning. However, it all means that the Huskies will probably move up to where they finished last season at No. 8 in the AP Poll.
How the upsets impact the Washington Huskies will be interesting to see how the prognosticators vote in the Week 2 polls.
UW handily beat Boise State 56-19 on Saturday. Heading into Saturday’s contest the Broncos received enough votes to essentially be ranked 30th in the nation. That’s a quality win for Washington.
Two spots ahead of Washington was Florida State who whipped up on No. 5 LSU, 45-24.
The others in the top 5 likely won’t move. Same with No. 6 USC and No. 7 Penn State.
No. 13 Notre Dame’s 42-3 victory over Navy in front of a national audience may not be enough to move them over No. 11 Texas and No. 12 Tennesee who both had commanding victories over Rice and Virginia, respectively.
However, future Big 12 opponents Colorado and Utah may have made enough noise to move into the top 10, and perhaps move past Washington. Colorado beat TCU while the Utes beat Florida.
The 14th-ranked Utah Utes were missing starting QB Cam Rising but easily beat the unranked Florida Gators.
The Deion Sanders-led Buffalos 3-point victory over the No. 17 Horned Frogs, probably wasn’t convincingly enough to vault them into the top 10 ahead of Washington. However, Colorado certainly vaulted itself into the top 20.
Additionally, Duke, on national TV handily beat No. 9 Clemson 28-7. That could move the Blue Devils up from “Others receiving votes” likely up to about the 20th spot, but perhaps as high as 15, not threatening the Huskies move up.
Oklahoma and Oregon had the most lopsided victories during the first full weekend of college football with 70+ point wins over FCS schools probably won’t move very much, if at all.
The Huskies take on the University of Tulsa Saturday at Husky Stadium at 2 PM.
