Where will No. 18 Washington be Ranked after 4-0 Start?

It took Jimmy Lake one week to have his Washington Huskies fall from the AP Top 25 last season, dropping the season-opener 13-7 to Montana.  After knocking off the 11th ranked Michigan State Spartans last week the Huskies jumped back into the AP Poll, landing at 18th and a 3-0 start.

To DeBoer’s credit, the Huskies didn’t appear to be flat after the big, emotional victory over MSU.  That said, the Huskies had many opportunities to embarrass the Cardinal but had to settle for 4 Peyton Henry field goals.  The Huskies end the first month of the season with a road game in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.  At 4-0 the Huskies should slide into the top 15 with two top 10 teams falling.  Even so, they will likely sit behind two Pac-12 Conference teams with 1 loss.

Those two formerly unbeaten teams who lost Saturday, along with three one-loss teams, may allow the Huskies to move up three spots.  Utah and Oregon both lost to SEC teams in the first week of the season.  Utah lost a heartbreaker to Florida while the Ducks were crushed by Georgia.  Baylor lost in the second week of the season to BYU who lost to Oregon the following week.

Ahead of Washington now are the 3-1 formerly sixth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, who lost by seven points to conference rival, Kansas State, 41-34–in Norman, Oklahoma, no less.  The other unbeaten who fell is number 10 Arkansas who lost on the final play of the game to Texas A&M, 23-21.

By beating Washington State in the final seconds in Pullman, Washington, the Ducks may have done enough to stay ahead of the Huskies this week.  On the other hand, Utah will likely rise, or at least hold their spot at 13th in the nation, with their 34-13 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils.

While Washington sits at 18th in the AP Poll the 40-22 victory may have been enough to move three spots up to number 15, but probably no higher.
