What to Watch For: Oregon State Looking for “Prevenge” Against Washington

What a treat. With just two games left in the regular season the Washington Huskies are making the trip to Corvallis for what could be the last time ever.

And the teams have saved their best for last.

And it’s going to be a top-10 match-up. Oregon State has bullied and run teams over on their way to a Top 10 ranking in the College Football Playoff poll, while the Huskies high flying offense is one of the country’s and Pac-12 Conference’’ best.

But the Oregon State Beavers have “Prevenge” on their minds as they’d like to “thank” the Huskies for abandoning them and the conference.

Finally, its time for these two teams to meet, and make waves in not only the Pac-12 title race, but also the national one.

Overcoming: For the first time this season the Washington Huskies are underdogs. Heading into Corvallis the Beavers are going to be one of the toughest tests of the year. The Huskies have battled to overcome in recent weeks, escaping disasters against Arizona State and Utah, and just not pulling away against USC and Stanford. This game will show how resilient this team really is.

Oregon State is going to play tough, physical football, and the Huskies are going to need a response.

Bralen Trice is a player that the Huskies should lean on. The edge rusher is leading the FBS in QB pressures, and turing a couple of those pressures into sacks early in the game could give the Huskies an early lead in the physical battle.

Protecting the Football: Michael Penix has started to come back to earth, that’s not to say that the quarterback isn’t looking like a top-10 pick, but he was 24 for 42 on pass attempts. The Beavers have been one of the best teams in the nation when it comes to generating interceptions and will look to make Penix aware of that.

Utah has one of the better defenses in the conference, and Penix and the offense did a very good job protecting the football. Previous turnovers look like a lack of focus on the Huskies end. Even the fumble last week was a focus play.

Corvallis is going to give it their everything to stop the Huskies and keep them out of rhythm. If UW locks in, they should take care of things, if not, it could be ugly.

Capitalizing: Going on the road, against a top-10 opponent, and one of the toughest teams in the nation, the Huskies cannot afford to leave points off the board.

There were mistakes against Utah, red zone trips that went scoreless, and balls dropped on the goal line. The Huskies pulled out a win in that game, but Oregon State won’t be so kind.

Dillon Johnson will be a key in the red zone, and spreading out targets between the top receivers and the tight ends will be crucial to keep the Huskies offense moving. The Beavers will be focused on getting stops, they want to even just slow down this offense and make the Huskies play defense.

If the Husky offense capitalizes early, Oregon State will be chasing the rest of the way.

Old School: This is a physical Beavers team. The Huskies need to match that energy. Carson Bruener has been the leader of that for the Huskies.

Bruener has made huge hits on special teams all season, and last week stepped up to make HUGE plays on defense. The defensive line, and the linebackers will need to step into the run game and make plays to get stops.

The secondary will have their hands full on the outside, but have looked good tackling this season. Preventing any big play threats will be a key for the defense as they will quite literally fight a war upfront. No matter how this game goes the Huskies will have to earn this one.

Heisman Race: Penix has fallen in the Heisman race. According to some experts Bo Nix has passed him. While we expect the Huskies and Ducks have one more meeting in them as members of the Pac-12 a top-10 road match-up is the perfect game for Penix to remind the nation who he is.

With Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk showing out and the ever consistent tight end group Penix has a plethora of weapons at his disposal. Last week Odunze only caught 3 passes.

But finished with 111 yards and 2 touchdowns. Meanwhile the ever reliable Jack Westover led the team in catches. Penix struggled with completion % last week but is poised to lock in.

Penix has every opportunity to be the Heisman, now he has to go out and take it.
