Jimmy Lake met with the media this morning via Zoom after putting the final touches of the 2021 class, or will they be the finishing touches?
Of note, Lake said that there’s a possibility more could join the class in February during the next signing period, what with attrition and other factors.
One story that was breaking as we were beginning the call was a report that QB Jacob Sirmon was entering the transfer portal,
“We wish him the best and we’ll be rooting for Jacob Sirmon”, Lake said, but this shouldn’t come as any surprise, given the fact that Sirmon almost transferred prior to 2019.
Other than that, there’s been no other reports yet of others entering the portal, but Lake seems to insinuate more may be on the way.
Other than that, Lake said it was an “exciting day”, and, while they took a small class, all 15 stayed committed until signing day.
Lake talked about the defensive tackles signed, saying they are “explosive”, as well as commenting that local linebacker Will Latu is a “phenomenal athlete…he’s going to be a monster in the middle.”
Lake said he was pleased they landed defensive backs with “good length.
On the subject of offensive linemen, Lake said that Scott Huff did a “phenomenal job of pinpointing guys”, and that they’re all “tough, nasty, and have good length.”
Of course, Lake couldn’t say enough about Sam Huard, “He’s the best in the country…ultra-accurate, but unbelievable leadership traits. He breaths football and is everything we want; accurate, leadership qualities, smart, we’re so excited he’s a Dawg”, Lake said.
Lake also said that Texas tailback Caleb Berry fits the mold of the “bruising back” Washington wants in their offense.
