WATCH: Jimmy Lake, Players Discuss Loss to Stanford

For whatever reason, the Stanford cardinal have had Washington’s number during their own terrible seasons in recent history. Jimmy Lake, Edefuan Ulofoshio, and Ty Jones talked about what went wrong in the first half to give the Tree another win in 2020.

** Lake called the opening drive against Stanford a “foreshadowing of things to come”, and that he doesn’t feel it’s for lack of energy or focus, “The guys are juiced up…we’re not stopping the run and that’s really the heart of the issue…We didn’t stop their offense until the end of the third quarter.”

** Lake said this really “takes the wind out of your sails”

** Lake added that the defense had difficulties getting to the quarterback because they were running the ball so efficiently, but asserted that “it’s not a confidence issue…no excuse…we got to get it fixed.”

** Lake called this a loss that “will string”, and it’s “unacceptable “, and “not Husky football”.

** Lake was, however, pleased with the efficiency of the offense, “No turnovers, no sacks…we’re happy the way fought…but we know we can play better than that. We left a lot out there.”

** When asked about the absence of Richard Newton on the field during the last two weeks, Lake said “We’re always going to rotate those guys — change up from week to week and we’re going to play the guys that are ready to go.”

** Ty Jones called the failing first-half “self-inflicted”, and said there’s a lot at play in terms of “guys getting corona and guys getting hurt”, but also said there’s “no excuse — we need to get our energy up.”

** Jones said he can’t put his finger on “one specific thing” but said this loss will sting and then the team will grow from it.

** Edefuan added, “We can’t expect to be miracle workers”, when asked about second-half comebackers, “That’s not football. We have to be consistent (as a defense).”
