The Washington Huskies offense yet again took about a quarter to find their rhythm. The first quarter was full of miscues and missed opportunities.
Jedd Fisch stated in his press conference that this was an issue at his previous spot at Arizona and that the team will look to fix the slow start. These will be necessary as the next opponent is Washington State. There is some extra vitriol in the 2024 season as UW hired former Washington State Athletic Director, Pat Chun, to do the same role in Seattle and some around the WSU program incorrectly blame the collapse of the Pac-12 on Washington.
Once the offense got rolling some of the lingering issues from Weber State look to be improving.
First, Jeremiah Hunter got involved in a big way with 6 receptions, 75 yards and a touchdown. Husky fans got to see Hunter do what made him such a weapon in Berkley.
Quarterback: The only sack on the day against the Huskies came when Will Rogers sacked himself on a bootleg where he slipped and fell. The play was indicative of the first two drives of the day. After that Rogers was surgical completing 21 of 26 for 261 yards and four touchdowns. Rogers took a step forward by completing longer throws into tighter windows.
Grade: B+
Receivers: The top three receivers for the Huskies have exceeded expectations early in the season. While there was some preseason hype around Denzel Boston it was all on projections. He is living up to those expectations and looks like a top-tier target for Rogers. As mentioned, Jeremiah Hunter showed his elite upside find separation while also making contested catches. The third piece to this core is Giles Jackson. Jackson is a problem for defenses with his ability in the middle of the field and his ball skills on the outside.
Grade: A
Running Backs: Jonah Coleman can do anything he wants to the defensive lines he has seen in the first two weeks of the season. He is averaging over 8.5 yards per carry and has eclipsed the 100 yard mark in both games. What’s better is all of the rust seems to be off Cameron Davis. Davis was patient and surgical in his runs on Saturday. Finally, Adam Mohammed continues to look explosive.
Grade: A
Tight Ends: The Huskies need Quiten Moore back as soon as possible. He is an elite blocker at every level of the offense. Decker DeGraaf and Keleki Latu filled in and were extremely effective in the passing game.
Grade: B
O-Line: The passing game averaged over 10 yeards per pass, the running game averaged over 7 yards per rush. Things are getting figured out across the line. While there was still some communication issues early Will Rogers was able to bail them out with some quick throws. Left tackle is still a question mark as Saone Faasolo and Maximus McCree battle for the starting spot.
