The University of Washington Women’s Basketball team backed up the “we run this state” claim thrown down by the UW Men’s Basketball team yesterday with their impressive win over Gonzaga as the women’s team continued its season-long roll Sunday afternoon as it defeated a strong Washington State team in Pullman. The victory over their cross-state rivals moved the winning streak to 10-0.
The No. 21 Cougars (9-2 overall, 0-1 Pac-12) gained a bit of traction in the second half of the game, cutting the Huskies’ twenty-point lead in half to maintain a glimmer of hope. Thankfully, UW never quite gave up its lead and pulled away with a 60-55 Apple Cup victory.
WSU managed two measly points during the entire first quarter against UW’s defense, and the Huskies capitalized on an eight-point lead that eventually catapulted into 20 in the second quarter. Senior forward Lauren Schwartz capped off 13 points by halftime, with junior Dalayah Daniels and sophomore guard Hannah Stines garnering 11 and 10, respectfully.
Washington let off the gas in the third quarter, unfortunately, and allowed the Cougars to go on a run to add 18 points to the board. WSU ended up outscoring the Huskies 38-23 for the half, but UW was able to do just enough to hold its opponent to a five-point deficit.
Stines finished the afternoon with a team-high 21 total points and also collected nine total rebounds. Schwartz was right behind her at 20 points. The Huskies shot 45-percent from the floor, compared to WSU’s 39.
Washington may swap spots in the AP Poll as the Cougars fall to 9-2 while UW remains unbeaten at 10-0.
UW’s next matchup will be against Saint Mary’s at home on Saturday, Dec. 16, with one more non-conference game at Louisville before it fully dives into its Pac-12 slate.
