Washington Will have Official Visit from Hard-Hitting 4-Star Las Vegas Defensive Back

Score another one for YouTube University.

Last week the University of Washington offered defensive back Gavin Day from Faith Lutheran in Las Vegas, who has a unique path to a Husky offer.

“My dad didn’t really play football, he was more of a basketball player ,” said 4-star 2026.  ” I started out playing soccer but fell in love with football. ”

However, without a skill set to draw from his dad sought help from a more and more common source.

“He just looked up some drills on YouTube then take me to the park every day to work on those drills,” Day recalled.

The hard work paid off of for the 6-3, 190-pound DB who was named to the all-conference and all-state teams last season.  He recorded 110 total tackles, 90 which were solo stops, 15 behind the line of scrimmage and a sack.  He also had 15 pass breakups, 2 interceptions with one that he returned for a touchdown.

Additionally, he forced 2 fumbles and blocked a punt.

“My dad had me do a lot of middle and free safety stuff,” he recalled.  “He played basketball in baseball in high school, but he didn’t play football.”

While his dad didn’t go to college he’s helped to produce two collegiate athletes as his older sister is a junior midfielder on the women’s soccer team at Robert Morris University of Pennsylvania.  When it comes to the recruiting process Taylor offered him some advice.

“She said not to really worry about how far the school is.  Go wherever is the best fit for you,–you always fly home.  Don’t select a school based out close to home it is.”

The Washington coaches catapulted themselves “easily in my Top 3,” he said.  They’re just really cool.

The Huskies clearly like the fit given Day’s size.

“They said that they really like my range in the middle of the field but also that I play sideline to with sideline,” he said.  They really like physicality coming down into the box too, and not being afraid to get a hit in on a ball carrier.”

Apart from being rangy like current Huskies DBs Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock both 6-4 and over 195, Day’s wingspan is 6-6.

“The long levers help with reaching around the receivers to break up passes,” he said.  “That’s an area that I’m working hard on improving, turning PBUs into interceptions.”

One of his favorite pastimes is snowboarding which has had some auxiliary benefits on the gridiron.

“I’ve certainly felt some benefits from snowboarding,” he informed.  “You’re building up leg strength, along with balance and flexibility.”

He recently wrapped up his 7-on-7 season and is refocusing on getting ready for his final high school season.

“We’re just continuing to work on getting faster and stronger and getting better foot work and all of the other DB stuff,” he said.

Working on his craft and still watching a lot of film on YouTube.
