Washington vs Ohio State: A Matter of Respect

As we close in on the closing days of the Urban Meyer Farewell Tour…otherwise known as the Rose Bowl activities in California this week, let us reflect on this thing called “respect”.

Is Washington being respected by the Buckeyes?

In a word….no.

If it isn’t Ohio State websites giving merit to phony quote memes from Jake Browning and Chris Petersen, it’s their players bemoaning the fact that they didn’t get to the playoffs.

Quarterback, Dwayne Haskins — when asked if his team should have been in the playoffs — exhibited a smarmy snicker and said, “we’ll take it out on Washington.”

Nice touch Dwayne!

He went on to tell a reporter, “I can tell you this — we’re going to win the game sir.”

It’s kind of been like this the past few days in Pasadena; If it isn’t the Urban Meyer retirement party, it’s a lot of crying and moaning from Ohio State players about not getting into the College Football Playoff.

Yeah, yeah, yeah — we get it. Urban Meyer is the greatest thing since sliced bread if you believe every word that comes out of the man’s mouth (which we don’t, just ask about all those recruiting texts on his phone that surreptitiously were deleted), but is he really retiring? Not according to former Notre Dame coach, Lou Holtz.

Holtz said this week on The Crowd’s Line that he believes this will be a close game and that the coaches at Ohio State are “discombobulated” due to the upcoming coaching change, but he also said that he believes Meyer will be the next head coach at Notre Dame.

“I believe he will coach at Notre Dame”, Holtz said.

That’s not just some member of the media saying this — it’s Lou Holtz. He’s as inside Notre Dame as the cot that Rudy Ruettiger slept on in the groundskeeper’s office.

But what’s even more distressing is that the fake Jake Browning quotes circulated over the weekend were attributed to Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.

And Adam Jude of the Seattle Times hasn’t even spoken up about it.

Perhaps he’s just trying to take the high road, but one would think Jude would have the self-respect as a journalist to come out and say “I never wrote that.”

The cure for all of this would be a Husky win, of course, but the good news is that — after tomorrow — we don’t have to hear about Urban Meyer’s last game anymore. For one thing — it won’t be.  Didn’t he “retire” from Florida too? Oh wait…

As for the ill respect from guys like Haskins? That comes from the top.

Chris Petersen would never allow any of his players to behave like spoiled toddlers when talking to the media. Haskins gave us all a glimpse into the mind of the Buckeye’s with his comments.

Respect for Washington? No — none can be found here.
