Washington Spring Practice No. 9: Pecking Order Emerging at Receiver

After a wild and windy Easter weekend, the Huskies were back inside Dempsy Indoor Arena to continue Spring Football–one of the longer practices they’ve had.  Overall, the players say that they’re liking full contact, and the toll is beginning to mount with a few transfers getting nicked up.

Observations:

Tight-end Devin Culp looks to be in great shape, and his hands look softer than ever

When receivers are in threes, Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk and McMillan are in; in four receiver sets, Germie Bernard is in and has climbed up (and is where he would have been at Michigan State).

During 11-on-11 full contact:

Running back Cam Davis came through with a couple of big pickups.  He was all over the field, working on pass protection, which isn’t easy with the ends coming at him from every angle.  He also caught some passes.

Even against Jabbar Muhammad, all-conference transfer defensive back from Oklahoma State, receiver Rome Odunze was no match.  Mohammad was rarely helped in deep coverage against him.  On one play the offense allowed him to face off against fellow Bishop Gorman product LB Edefuan Ulofoshio – once again, a mismatch.  Odunze drove him deep and took a comebacker for a solid pickup of 8-10 yards.

Defense (notably Maurice Heims and Bralen Trice) put some pressure on Penix throughout practice.  The RBs did a good job of holding off the edge rushers.  In the last practice open to the press, there was considerably more sacks.

Edefuan Ulofoshio went down hard at one point, clutching his arm.  A few minutes later he was back out on his feet and practicing, no worse for the wear.  Thaddeus Dixon got trucked by Germie Bernard, remaining down for a few seconds.  He too looked fine the rest of the way.  Other players were hobbled throughout, with nobody that wasn’t able to continue today.

However, two transfer RBs weren’t seen much in practice.  Mississippi State transfer back Dillon Johnson didn’t practice, and neither did Arizona State transfer Daniyel Ngata fora significant portion

True freshman Tybo Rogers lined up all over the field – wide left, wide right and in the slot a few times.  Most frequently he went back next to whichever QB was in the backfield.  He looks to be Washington’s most-explosive back.

Dylan Morris was as sharp as ever.  He has been building a very good rapport with Denzel Boston, Germie Bernard, Taj Davis, and the TEs.  He had several passes that went for scores.

The there’s a clear difference between Punter 1 and Punter 2.  The field goal kickers have been booming the ball, but the punters will need to be more consistent.

Visitors:  Past, Present, and Future

Seattle Prep is on Spring Break, with many players showing up at the practice.  A Former Prep LB was serenaded for his birthday by the team, and his younger brother, an 8th grade QB, was also on hand.

Speaking of family, 2024 QB commit, EJ Caminong was at practice.  Mike Martin will have an interview with the Garfield QB later on today.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Ryan Otton addressed the team after practice and received the biggest applause of the day.
