Energy was running high during the 13th and final official practice for the Washington football team, with players all over Dempsey Indoor Center hustling their hearts out, constantly cheering and yelling whenever a play proved successful.
While several of the team’s rooms are dealing with minor shifts and scrambles, there remains plenty of eyes on the UW running backs’ progress, especially given Wayne Taulapapa’s departure. The favored starter currently looks to be junior Cam Davis, who didn’t fail to impress during practice. Davis got in plenty of good runs, evading the defense and carrying the ball down the field multiple times.
Another RB standout was Tybo Rogers, the freshman out of Bakersfield, California. Rogers was able to cut right through the defense on a couple of plays, and was seen blasting through down the turf.
It is known that head coach Kalen DeBoer likes versatility when it comes to his backs, so the athleticism and adaptability shown by these two is a promising sign. It looks like the Huskies’ backs are more than capable of stepping into the boundary and becoming pass catchers, which will throw a challenge in the face of any linebacker.
More notes on running backs:
Senior Richard Newton was spotted practicing, back and working hard after having missed several practices due to injury
Other backs, including junior Daniel Ngata and sophomore Sam Adams, had solid outings, getting several good reps in as well.
However, Mississippi State transfer Dillon Johnson has not been seen since early in the Spring, when he hobbled off the field the first week back.
Cam Davis has benefited from Johnson being sidelined, and appears to be ensconced as RB1.
The rest of the RBs will be splitting reps, as each has his own skill sets. Ngata is versatile, as is Adams, who has a completely different build.
Mike Martin will take a deeper look at the RBs tomorrow.
