Washington Softball Takes Two of Three in Pac-12 Opener

Washington Softball Takes Two of Three in Pac-12 Opener

On a rainy weekend in Seattle, the Sun Devils were able to sneak away with a Sunday victory to avoid the sweep.

After a pair of strong victories on Friday and Saturday, the Huskies (18-3, 2-1 Pac-12) faced a brutal weather delay on Sunday and could not overcome the Sun Devils in a sloppy 9-3 loss.

The No. 5 Washington softball program picked up 5-2 and 4-0 victories on Friday and Saturday behind terrific pitching, with sophomore Ruby Meylan and senior Lindsay Lopez picking up complete-game victories in the circle. Uncharacteristically, Meylan (7-2) struggled early against Arizona State and picked up her second loss of the year.

Huskies overcome early deficit in comeback win

After allowing two runs in the first two innings, Meylan pitched lights-out in the circle. Meylan had nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched while allowing seven hits, a walk, and two runs.

Junior Kinsey Fiedler and fifth-year Brooke Nelson both had great games offensively for the Huskies, with each batting 2 for 3 for a pair of RBIs. Senior Jillian Celis went 1 for 1 with two walks and a sacrifice fly.

The scoring started in the first inning when Arizona State hit a solo home run with one out. After giving up a double in the following at-bat, Meylan shut down the Sun Devils for the remainder of the inning, stranding a runner at third.

The Sun Devils capitalized on a leadoff double to score on a groundout in the second inning, but that was the last time they would come across the plate.

Nelson delivered a one-out two-RBI single in the bottom frame to tie the game, and Fiedler delivered a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

The Huskies added another insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, and Meylan closed out the game to lead the Huskies to a 5-2 victory.

Lopez shuts out the Sun Devils in a 4-0 victory for the Huskies

Lopez (5-1) regained her end-of-season form from last season with a complete game shutout on Saturday, allowing two walks and four hits while striking out seven.

It was scoreless for the first three innings until Washington struck first thanks to the baserunning of sophomore Sydney Stewart. After advancing to first on an HBP, Stewart advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Olivia Johnson, advanced to third on the throw, and scored after an error from the first baseman to take a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies secured another run in the fourth thanks to baserunning after senior Avery Hobson reached on an infield single before stealing second base. Hobson scored on a single from sophomore Brooklyn Carter to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Alana Johnson improved the lead to 4-0 after crushing a two-run blast over the center field wall. Lopez continued her excellent performance in the circle to close out the game for the Huskies.

Huskies suffer sloppy loss in sloppy weather on Sunday

Whether it was the weather or pitching, nothing went in the right direction for the Huskies on Sunday in a 9-3 loss.

Nelson played well to open the game in the circle, tossing two innings and striking out three, allowing three hits and a run. Meylan entered in the third and the game turned on its head, with the Sun Devils scoring four runs on three walks and three hits in one inning.

Freshman Sidne Peters struck out three and allowed one run, a pair of hits, and a pair of walks in two innings. Lopez closed out the final two innings allowing three runs on four hits.

Junior Rylee Holtorf had a great day in the loss, finishing 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs, and a home run.

The Huskies will look to put Sunday’s performance behind them as they travel to Arizona and look forward to winning their second consecutive conference series.
