Washington Softball Jumps to No. 4 After 3-0 Weekend

It’s official, the Huskies are the highest-ranked one-loss team in the nation.

A deserving spot for the No. 4 Washington softball program after going 3-0 in the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational this weekend, picking up a 9-1 run-rule victory on Saturday against Wisconsin before seeing their remaining two matchups against No. 12 LSU and North Carolina canceled due to weather.

Washington plays Florida Gulf Coast on February 20th at 2 pm and has scheduled a makeup game against Stetson on February 21st. After that, The Huskies will play five games in the South Florida Showdown this weekend, resulting in seven games in just five days.

If Washington manages to escape this stretch undefeated, it will be hard not to consider them in the top three.

Sophomore Brooklyn Carter still leads the way for the Husky offense, batting .429 with two RBIs, seven runs, and a team-high eight stolen bases. Senior Avery Hobson has also been making big strides at the plate, batting .364 with three RBIs, six runs, three walks, and four stolen bases.

Getting baserunners is key for this Husky offense, especially when they pose a danger on the basepaths. With nine walks in seven games, sophomore Sydney Stewart has been a crucial element for this Husky offense to generate scoring opportunities. Leading the team with a .560 on-base percentage, she has also stolen five bases and scored seven runs for the Huskies

Sophomore Ruby Meylan seems to get better and better with each game she tosses in the circle. Now sitting at a .66 ERA and a .89 WHIP, she is frightening for batters to come up against with 25 strikeouts in 21.1 innings pitched while only giving up two extra-base hits. The reigning Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week will have plenty of work cut out for her heading into this busy weekend.

A year ago on this date (February 20th), the Huskies lost a trap game to McNeese State 3-2 before entering conference play with three losses. Picking up big wins this week ahead of the weekend would go a long way for the Huskies to set themselves up for success going into the final season of Pac-12 play.
