Washington Softball Delivers Second Consecutive Conference Series Win

Washington Softball Delivers Second Consecutive Conference Series Win

The bats were on fire on Friday and Saturday for No. 7 Washington softball in the desert against No. 22 Arizona, but Sunday was a completely different story.

Sophomore Alana Johnson and senior Jillian Celis were unstoppable on offense in Friday’s 13-2 victory, with a seven-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. In the fifth inning, Celis and Johnson delivered back-to-back home runs before doing it again in the sixth inning, with Celis, Johnson, and junior Kinsey Fiedler combining for back-to-back-to-back bombs.

Johnson finished Friday 4 for 4 with two home runs and three runs, while Celis finished the day 3 for 3 with two home runs, four runs, and five RBIs.

Saturday’s 11-3 victory was all thanks to massive games from fifth-year Brooke Nelson and sophomore Sydney Stewart, who combined to bat 7-7 with two home runs and nine RBIs. Down 3-0 after the first, the Huskies proceeded to score 11 unanswered runs to cruise their way to victory.

Sunday went a bit differently for the Huskies, only generating three hits and giving up a late two-run homerun to fall 2-0 in the series finale.

Huskies ride the deep ball to a cruising victory in the series opener

Washington led from beginning to end on Friday night, displaying its power with five home runs on the day en route to a 13-2 victory.

Sophomore Ruby Meylan had another great start for the Huskies, allowing five hits and two runs in six innings while striking out ten batters. Meylan (8-2) tossed her second double-digit strikeout game of the season but will need to work on her control, walking four batters in the process.

Four different Huskies delivered multiple RBIs, with A. Johnson and Celis leading the way with seven combined. Freshman Giselle Alvarez and junior Olivia Johnson both picked up a pair of RBIs each.

The Huskies found themselves up 3-0 quickly in the first after an RBI double from Celis was followed by an infield RBI single from A. Johnson. O. Johnson ripped a two-out RBI single down the left-field line to put the Huskies in a comfortable spot early.

Washington secured another runner in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from O. Johnson, increasing the lead to 4-0. Arizona responded with an RBI double in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-1.

That’s when the home run barrage began for the Huskies.

Celis and A. Johnson delivered back-to-back home runs with one out in the fifth inning before Alvarez delivered a two-RBI single in the sixth inning to make it an 8-1 ballgame.

Then, the Huskies did it again.

Celis ripped a three-run bomb to right-center field, followed by an A. Johnson home run to left field before a third consecutive home run from Fiedler increased the Husky lead to 13-1.

The Huskies would go on to win 13-2 in six innings.

Huskies power their way to a comeback run-rule victory

It was a rough start for senior Lindsay Lopez to start the game, giving up three runs in the first inning before bouncing back spectacularly. Lopez (6-1) was perfect the rest of the day, striking out five after only allowing three hits in six innings.

Washington immediately came back from a 3-0 deficit in the second inning, with Nelson knocking in a runner on an infield single before Stewart crushed a two-run bomb over center field.

O. Johnson took the lead for the Huskies in the fourth inning with a one-out home run to left field, and although the Huskies managed to get two runners on, they were left stranded after a flyout.

Fiedler delivered an RBI double in the fifth before Stewart ripped a two-RBI single through the left side to increase the lead to 7-3. The Huskies put it away in the sixth inning thanks to Brooke Nelson.

After back-to-back groundouts, a single was followed by two walks to load the bases for Nelson. On a 1-0 count, Nelson blasted one over left field for a grand slam to increase the lead to 11-3. After a shutdown inning from Lopez, the Huskies walked away with the victory.

Arizona hits a late homer to avoid the sweep in series finale

Freshman Sidne Peters played well in her start, tossing 2.1 innings while only allowing two hits and picking up a strikeout. Meylan (8-3) tossed 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and two walks, striking out six but allowing a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

The bats went cold to end the weekend for the Huskies, only reaching base five times with three hits and two walks. The Huskies were able to get in scoring position in the first and fourth innings but were unable to capitalize.

After a two-run home run in the sixth inning, the Huskies failed to rally in the seventh leading to a 2-0 victory for the Wildcats.

The Huskies will host UCLA this weekend, with the first matchup of the series taking place at 5pm on Friday.
