Fresh off of a 36-33 victory over the Oregon Ducks in the 6th game of the season, Washington quarterback Michael Penix and receiver Rome Odunze have been named to the Associated Press’ Midseason All-America team.
In the release, the AP quoted Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer:
“The production, the talent, all that, that’s one thing. The heart that he’s got. The guts he’s got and the willingness to just grind through it. Grit. There’s not enough words to describe how I feel about him,” Washington coach Kalen DeBoer said after Penix led the Huskies to a 36-33 victory against No. 9 Oregon last week.
The Washington passer leads the nation with 383.5 yards per game, is 4th with 20 passing TDs. Penix is also 119 yards behind only Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders with 2,301 passing yards despite playing in one fewer game than Sanders.
Penix’s target for the game-winning TD pass, Odunze is 4th in the nation in receiving yards with 736. However, the three above him have all played 7 games. He’s 19th in the nation with 40 receptions but second in the nation by .2 yards per game. Penix also has Ja’Lynn Polk at 12th in the nation in receiving yards per game at 97.7.
No other player on the AP’s number 5 team in the country is on the list.
Of note, Former Washington edge rusher Laiatu Latu, a fifth-year player at UCLA is on the AP’s first-team defense.
The Huskies play Arizona State Saturday night at Husky Stadium at 7:30.
