Washington Officially Announces Defensive Assistant Coach Vinnie Sunseri

As was first reported by RealDawg.com 3 days ago, the Washington Huskies have added former New England Patriots running backs coach, Vinnie Sunseri.  While his role is yet to be defined, he will likely head to the defensive side of the ball to work with the safeties.

As a collegiate player, Sunseri played for Nick Saban at Alabama.  He was taken in the 5th round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints.  In the NFL he split 3 seasons between the Saints, the New England Patriots, and the San Francisco 49er.

Here’s a video of his 73-yard interception return for a touchdown against Heisman Trophy-winner Johnny Manziel.

While with the Saints in 2015 an arm injury shortened his NFL career.  He returned to Tuscaloosa to coach under Nick Saban with whom he won back-to-back national championships as a player, winning another ring as graduate assistant.

At the age of 30 he moved to the professional ranks to work as a defensive assistant in 2020 then running backs coach from 2021 until signing with the Huskies.
