The Washington Huskies have earned the rights for the final shot at landing the commitment of Sacramento, California safety/linebacker Kingston Lopa before the July “dead period” in recruiting.
He will be one of approximately 20 Husky targets on campus weekend of June 23rd.
For three months Lopa was committed to Arizona. However, after his commitment to the Wildcats Michigan, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Texas offered prompting him to reconsider his options. In the final week of April he had a change of heart and reopened his recruiting.
A little over a year ago, he was a 3-star safety when Washington offered. The Huskies were his third Power 5 offer.
Now a national recruit, he also holds offers from LSU, Auburn, Nebraska, USA, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Colorado and Washington State and Oregon.
Depending on the scouting service, his height has varied between 6-4 and 6-5, (on his Twitter profile he lists himself at 6-4 and 195). Last season he was recognized as Metro League’s Multi-Purpose Player of the Year. Because of that versatility, the position schools are recruiting him as has also varied between safety and linebacker.
In 13 games in 2022 he had 1169 all-purpose yards for Grant High School, including 973 receiving yards and 17 TDs. On the other side of the ball he had 29 total tackles and an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He also returned 5 punts as an average of 35.4 yards.
How the Huskies would utilize him would likely be at safety as he’s similar in stature to Asa Turner (6-3, 206) and Tristan Dunn (6-4, 189).
