Washington Defensive Report Card: Stingy Defense Helps Offense Blow Away Hurricanes

The Washington Huskies took care of business against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to the tune of 43-10 on Saturday. While the offense left points on the field the defense was stingy when it came to points.

When needed, the Husky defense came up with some major stops on fourth down in scoring territory.

UW held Tulsa to 2-4 on fourth down with scoring opportunities that limited the total points. The defense was far from perfect allowing 22 first downs on the day and 318 yards on the day.  The flip side to those numbers is that it Washington’s defense prevented explosive plays.

Here are our grades for week two

Defensive Line

The D-Line had flashes of brilliance in the run game. Ulumoo Ale, Tuli Letuiligasenoa, and Jacob Bandes ate up blocks on a team that refused to give up on the run. With that being said the Golden Hurricane offense still averaged over 4 yards a carry.

Defensive Line Grade: B

Edge

Bralen Trice notched his first tackle for loss on the season. He was battling double teams and look explosive and was a step away from a major statistical game in the backfield.

Voi Tunuufi continued to impress with a sack. Sekai Asoau-Afoa made life uncomfortable for the quarterbacks most of the game. Getting home on sacks is paramount to the success of the defense.

Edge Rush Grade: B-

Linebackers

It is obvious that Edefuan Ulofoshio raises the bar in the linebacking when he’s in the field. He has played two very solid games with eight tackles and a pass defended this weekend.

Alphonso Tuputala racked up 5 tackles as well. The linebackers are key in run defense which needs to be better as the opponent offensive lines get bigger in the weeks to come.

Linebackers Grade: B-

Defensive Backs

The defensive backs took a massive hit with Asa Turner leaving the game after the first drive and Davon Banks also hitting the turf and not returning to the game.

The rise of Davon Banks and his 4 pass defenses against Boise State made most think that Banks was poised to be a breakout star for the defense in 2023.

The hope is that his injury will be mild and he will be available as soon as this week. Outside of that the defensive backfield was solid.

Jabbar Muhmmad continues to impress as a big time shutdown corner. He looked like he was shot out of a cannon on a sack of Roman Fuller.

Kamren Fabiculanan snagged his second interception with Thaddeus Dixon was a fingertip away from a second. It was not all good news for the position group, they did allow some chunk plays through the air.

Defensive Backs Grade: A-
