Washington basketball lands 4-star guard Wesley Yates

Mike Hopkins got a good one in Wesley Yates. The four-star shooting guard from Beaumont United in Houston, Texas has officially announced his commitment to Washington. Yates is a fringe five-star, and is currently ranked as the 30th overall player by the 247 Sports Composite, and 35th overall by 247 Sports.

Yates is a super athletic 6’4 combo guard, and is going to be a starter the moment he steps on campus. He can shoot, gets to the rim at ease, and knows how to get the ball to his teammates. Multiple sources have said that Quincy Pondexter deserves a lot of credit in earning Yates’ commitment, as it was his relationship with the star guard that sealed the deal.

During his junior season, Yates averaged 19.7 points per game to go with four rebounds, two assists, and 2.8 steals over his team’s 35 games. He took his visit to Washington in November of 2021, and the Huskies did a great job sealing the deal with him despite late pushes from Auburn, LSU, and Texas. He also chose to play college ball on Montlake over Stanford, Gonzaga, and Baylor among his 26 offers.

Yates is currently rated as a .9884 by the 247 Composite, which slots him in as the seventh highest-rated recruit to ever commit to Washington, just in front of Jon Brockman. After four-star Garfield (Wash.) forward Jaylin Stewart committed to UConn in September, this is a huge boost for Hopkins’ class of 2023. The Huskies currently have 19 offers out, and maybe this, combined with some early season success, will bring in a little momentum for the staff.
