Tuesday Scoop: 10/15

I covered a lot of ground yesterday with my weekly Monday Morning Recruiting article, but I had some questions asked of me in the past couple of days that I had not gotten a crack at.

So I’ll make this a Recruiting Q&A and answer some of those questions…

Why aren’t we taking a defensive tackle in this class?

The Huskies didn’t really need an interior guy in this class. They are loaded right now and, let’s face it, guys rotate at Washington on the d-line and so in taking a defensive end you could kill two birds with one stone (cough cough…Xavier Carlton…cough cough). Other than that, the need for a d-tackle in this class was not a big one.

Ruth, when you wrote about Jalen McMillan’s visit you said he’s still solid, was there ever any doubt? And then what’s this about Notre Dame coming on stronger? Do we have this kid locked in or not?

To address the first part of that question (as I did on Twitter), the headline after McMillan’s visit was just that: A headline. It’s not unusual for us reporters to ask kids if they reaffirmed their commitments while on their official trips, and if they say they did and they’re still 100% solid, it just makes a good headline. That’s all it was. Now about the Notre Dame coaches coming on strong, I did address this in yesterday’s article. But to recap, Notre Dame coaches have proven to be guys who don’t take “no” for an answer and continue to pursue a kid even after he’s told them such. It worked for them last year with Asa Turner — to the extent of muddying the proverbial waters with his original commitment to Washington — but in the end he stuck with the Huskies. I don’t think McMillan is going to flip to Notre Dame, but I also don’t believe Notre Dame is going to stop bugging him any time soon.

So what about Covington’s twitter?

What about it? To be honest, I believe that (from what I have come to know) that Saguaro’s head coach wants his guys to be primarily focused on their team on their Twitter accounts and not make them “recruiting hype” accounts. This is not uncommon, and so many kids have taken to Instagram to display more about their personal lives and future goals. I truly wish fans would just let this go and stop over-analyzing it.

What’s going on with 2021 linebacker recruiting?

This question has been asked several times because there has been a lot of stress since the season started over linebackers. Whether outside or inside, the Huskies continue to place a high priority on this. Obviously, they have Sav’ell Smalls for outside, plus Cooper McDonald and Carson Bruener for the inside in 2020. I doubt they take anyone else in this class. As for 2021, however, I believe they will take another couple of inside guys and outside guys (remember, not all outside guys will play BUCK). I did mention in another article that I had heard that there may be a position move in 2020 for a current Husky who is playing a different position, but for now the 2021 guys I’m hearing the most about (OLB and ILB) are Ethan Calvert, Keith Brown, Trey Reynolds, Terrence Cooks, Logan Fano, and Julien Simon. I think Calvert is a huge priority right now, but I have also heard there’s a guy named Wynden Hoo’huli from Hawai’i who is being watched as well.

Who’s the next commit?

Despite what you might think, this is always a loaded question. But I believe the next commit could be Jake Overman. Jacob Garcia holds a PWO offer and he’s still mulling over all his options. I don’t believe Washington will land Gary Bryant at this point, and I still believe they had a better-than-average shot at Xavier Carlton.
