Tristan Dunn, safety–a one-time Arizona State commit, Dunn bled purple and gold. As a kid, his favorite player was Jake Locker, and even got a picture with Locker at an event. The only reason he committed to ASU was because of his academic eligibility. Once his schooling was sorted out he quickly flipped to UW. This was no doubt a difficult decision, but due to lack of playing time the Washington-native chose to transfer out.
Dunn delivered the lumber on special teams, where he had 3 tackles. The third-year player lost ground on the depth chart and was never able to make it back up when he missed Spring Football and the start of Fall camp.
Maurice Heims, edge–a German-native Heims struggled with injuries most of his Husky career. This past season he appeared to be in great shape. At 6-5 and 263 pounds, he looked every bit the part of an edge rusher but he was unable to climb the depth chart of Washington’s deepest position. In fact, when
Lance Holzclaw, edge–the hero of the USC game, Holzclaw lived up to his nickname: Showtime. Despite seeing far fewer snaps than most other Husky edges, Holzclaw was 3rd on the team in QB pressures. Against the Trojans he saw the field for one play but made it count causing Miller Moss to throw an incomplete pass to end the final threat. For his career, he saw the field in 27 games including all 12 this season.
Getting Zach Durfee and Russell Davis healthy would have cut into his playing time significantly next season, was certainly a factor in “Showtime”‘s departure.
Jack McCallister, punter–a native of time Pacific Northwest, McCallister had his best season punting, averaging 44 yards a punt. It was thought to be odd when he announced that the junior from Edmonds was putting his name into the transfer until a few hours later when the Huskies announced the signing of Australian kicking specialist Dusty Zimmer from Adelaide, Australia.
