Tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants will have a special meaning to Washington running back, Will Nixon.
On the Giants’ sideline will be his dad, Jeff Nixon, the Giants running back coach.
While Seattle is Will’s adopted home, safe to say that tonight he’ll love New York.
Will originally signed with Nebraska but had to overcome an ACL injury and decided to transfer to Washington. Now at full strength, he and Dillon Johnson are teaming up as Washington’s 1-2 punch running back/receivers.
Including Saquan Barkley in New York, Jeff has coached some big names in his days in his 14 seasons in the NFL including Reggie Bush, DeSean Jackson, Brian Westbrook LeSean McCoy, Leonard Weaver, and Christian McCaffery.
While his dad was coaching the offense at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Will was a high school star 12 minutes away at Midway High School. There Will developed into either a running back who could catch passes or a receiver who could run between the tackles.
Much like McCaffrey who his dad coached at Carolina. In fact, this is probably the second time Nixon will root for the Seahawks opponent as Carolina beat the Seahawks last year in Seattle.
Saturday night while in New York Jeff got to see Will carry the ball twice for 8 yards and catch a Michael Penix pass for 27 yards, although it is recorded as a 16-yard reception due to a holding penalty.
The Pac-12 After Dark game didn’t finish until early hours of Sunday morning. As luck would have it for Jeff, the Giants didn’t play until Monday night—against the Seahawks.
Jeff was able to be on hand to root for his son in for the season-opening victory over Boise State. In that game Will led all Washington ball carriers as the Huskies won 56-19.
But tonight, it is going to be Will that’s doing the rooting.
