Time to Tear off the Bandage: Play Huard Now

The Husky offense in 2021 has been anemic and inconsistent in every game. That’s a glaring, Captain-Obvious fact.

By no means would we say this is all on Dylan Morris, but what is apparent is that he’s a quarterback who is pressing too hard to make plays in order to cover up for poor blocking up front and also poor play-calling throughout the season.

Again, this is not an indictment against Morris; quarterbacks get all the praise when the game goes well, but also take all the heat when the game goes horribly wrong.

Interceptions have been a bench-mark for Morris this year, but the offense as a whole needs energy and spice and zip and zing…

Enter Sam Huard. The Wunderkind of the Husky class of 2021.

Today the UW Daily reported that Huard has been splitting snaps with the first-team offense during practice, and although Junior Adams — who’s now the interim offensive coordinator — was somewhat ambiguous in his comments this week about the direction of the passing game, he won’t rule out playing Huard in the remaining games of the Huskies’ schedule.

Washington needs to win two out of three games to get a bowl bid, and while it’s tough for a guy who’s been the starting quarterback to split his job with a freshman, it’s beneficial to step back and really watch the game.

It would be good to see Huard play the remaining three games and let the chips fall where they may.

But wait, you might say, what about Huard’s redshirt?

This is 2021 — these kids don’t stay past three years at the most. And there still may be certain situations where Morris will be the guy, but the future is Huard — and with the nightmare that 2021 has been so far, that future has to start now.

Besides, many of these young receivers have spent time working out with Huard, and some even played 7-on-7 with him. He’s a known commodity to these guys.

Thankfully, the game is at home this weekend. Husky fans are breathing a sigh of relief knowing that the offense is in different hands going forward, and while there’s still no telling what will happen with the staff by season’s end, the bandage has been ripped off.

Huard could give the Huskies the spark that they desperately need. Junior Adams will be more aggressive in his play-calling — the offense as a whole may rally to get this team bowl eligible.
