Jimmy Lake took to the airwaves these evening, talking with KJR about where things stand with the team, the beginning of the season, various outcomes, and more.
Lake began by telling his hosts that it seemed like “10 years ago” since he took the helm of Husky Football, adding that it’s been a “rollercoaster for everybody”.
They even sent the freshmen home for three weeks more recently, but now “everyone is back in town”, Lake said, and tomorrow the Pac-12 will vote on how the season will go forth — if it goes forth, that is.
“We’re still practicing next week”, Lake said, noting that specific attention will be to competition, getting bigger, faster and stronger — and learning techniques.
“The Dawgs are going to be ready”, he said.
The Huskies had practiced “extensively” before the Pac-12 announced the season would be postponed, Lake said. But they won’t return to full pads next week; the Dawgs will practice in shorts, shirts, and helmets.
Right now there is speculation that the season will start Halloween weekend, but Lake would prefer they begin on November 7th.
“Any coach would love more time”, he said. But Halloween weekend would provide five-and-a-half weeks of preparation.
The other topic that came up was that of a vote for the college football playoff — and what this means for the Pac-12 who will have only played seven games (six regular season and a Pac-12 championship game) opposed to other conferences where teams have played 10 or more games.
The discussion focused on whether the NCAA should move up the voting period, but Lake expressed his thoughts on how it work better for all Power Five conferences, in general:
The winners of each conference would each compete, with the top two teams getting byes, “And then the winners would move into the traditional final four”, Lake said.
He also talked about how it would be fair if there were a seventh game for the second and third place spots for the Pac-12 teams who don’t make it to the championship game.
As it is, the Pac-12 forecast is for six games; three at home and three on the road, “And here we go”, Lake said.
Other info:
** Every player this year gets a “free year”, meaning the NCAA has allowed players to go through the year without losing any time. “If you’re a true freshman this year you’ll be a true freshman next year”, Lake laughed.
** And to answer questions about how the scholarship numbers will be effected by this, Lake said “If we have ten seniors that want to come back we’ll have 85 scholarships plus ten”.
** Lake said he’d love to start every season with a Big 10 opponent, home and away, and even an SEC opponent, “And any of the Power Five conferences”, Lake said.
** Lake said the Huskies will run a pro-style offense; downhill running attack, “We have the biggest offensive line in the Pac-12”, he noted. And a pro-style defense.
** On new transfer QB, Kevin Thompson, Lake said “I was extremely excited to add somebody of a veteran status”, Lake said, “But it’s going to be a completely open competition (at QB).”
** Lake talked about continuing on with the Built for Life culture in Husky Football, “It is extremely important to us”, he said. But added there will be a “few tweaks here and there… we want to push to bring that national championship back here”.
** Lake talked about the progression of DB, Kyler Gordon. He’s wearing #2 this year and Lake said they are very excited about what he will bring to the field in 2020.
** His most vivid memory for Lake? “The 2016 game versus Stanford…the energy, the fans…we felt like we went over a mountain to beat those guys. It was a tremendous game…the electricity and it was like we went over a mountain”, Lake said.
