The Husky Defense Aces Another Test

The Washington Huskies have now played in two games and have yet to give up a touchdown. While this trend won’t continue forever with the competition again getting better next week, the fact is this defense has dominated all while replacing almost the entire depth chart.

The Huskies were tested early after a blocked punt started the Eastern Michigan Eagles on the Husky 32 yard line. The Dagws stonewalled the Eagles on 4th and goal from the Husky three yard line when Cole Snyder’s pass fell incomplete.

The defense held the Eagles as the offense got off to another slow start. After giving up a field goal on Eastern Michigan’s second possession, the Huskies forced their first takeaway of the year on a fumble recovery by Cam Broussard that got the offense back on track.

Through the first two games of the season the Huskies defense has given the offense all the time and support it has needed to get into rhythm.

While the Huskies gave up three field goals, two more than what they gave up in week one, it needs to be said that Jesus Gomez hit field goals from 50 and 57 yards out.

Defensive line: The D-Line took over early in the game as chunk plays by the Eagle running backs all but dried up after the first two series. Eastern Michigan was held to just 2 yards a carry. The D-line also contributed 3.5 of the 7 sacks on the day. Not too shabby
Grade: A

Edge: Zach Durfee has arrived on Montlake. He led the team with 2.5 sacks and altered the game with his relentless pass rush. Cole Snyder was never comfortable as the edge players were winning their one-on-ones. Also contributing to the sack party was Lance Holtzclaw.
Grade: A

Linebackers: The only thing the linebackers didn’t do is get a sack. Carson Bruener and Alphonzo Tuapatala dominated the middle of the field in pass coverage in stopping the run.
Grade: A

Cornerbacks: Cole Snyder was held to 16-27 and 129 yards. There just wasn’t much open anywhere for the Eagles offense to find yards. Steve Belichick continues to roll out many corners with very little difference in production.
Grade: A

Safeties: Makell Esteen is going to force the Big 10 play by play crew to learn how to pronounce his last name. Number 24 was consistently around the ball Saturday afternoon and finished the day with 4 tackles. The safeties have been effective in coverage as well as in run support.
