Takeaways: Washington Win Big Revenge Game Against Michigan

Takeaways: Washington Win Big Revenge Game Against Michigan

In an exclamation point on a wild weekend of college football the Washington Huskies upset number 10 Michigan 27-17 at Husky Stadium.  In lifting their record to 4-2 were able to make their mark on the playoff landscape this weekend. Coming off a disappointing loss to Rutgers, UW had a chance to show the country how good they really are.

In a rematch of last years national championship it was the Huskies who came out on top making the big plays to defeat Michigan 27-17.

Here’s our takeaways from a big conference win at Husky Stadium.

Winning Upfront

In a game that we knew was going to be decided at the line of scrimmage the Huskies needed a big game in the trenches, and boy did they get it.

From the first snap to the final plays the defenseive line was making life hell for the Wolverines. No matter who was in at QB there were defensive lineman crashing the cockpit or getting hands in the path of the ball .

Despite just one sack from Isaiah Ward, Jack Tuttle felt the pressure all night long.  Stepping in for the injured Jayvon Parker, Voi Tunuufi led the way for the Huskies defensive line with 6 tackles, including a forced fumble as a defensive lineman and a handful of pressures to really throw things off for the Wolverines.

Along with excellent D-Line play the linebacker duo of Alphonso Tuputala and Carson Bruener looked excellent once again as they combined for 11 tackles.

Big Plays, Big Games

With Michael Penix back in the house this season’s offense showed us flashes of last  Denzel Boston and Giles Jackson went for 80 and 78 yards respectively, and each got a touchdown.

While the yards have been there all year, the big plays finally looked like the Huskies of old. Boston averaged 16 yards per catch and Jackson 19.5.

Perhaps the most exciting play of the night was Jackson’s 39 yard reception on 3rd and 11 to set up the Huskies first TD of the game and set the tone for the rest of the night.

Not only were the big names making big plays but it was a full team effort. Including Boston and Jackson seven Husky players had a gain of 15 yards or more.

No Fly Zone?

On the other side of the ball the Husky secondary was making plays all night long. Outside of a couple carries from Donovan Edwards Michigan could not push the ball downfield. Even after replacing Alex Orji with the more pass oriented Jack Tuttle the Huskies kept the skies clean defensively. Tuttle managed just 98 passing yards due to the Husky defense.

Kamren Fabiculanan had himself a huge game as he had one of the Huskies four passes defended and sealed the game with his diving interception late. Fabiculanan was just one of the Huskies that came up big in the secondary.

Home Field Advantage

That was the game the Huskies needed. This is a whole new season after last night. The home crowd brings an energy to this team that they just don’t get otherwise.

The defense played hungry, the offense was electric, and guys were fighting for every yard.

Whether it was the crowd, the Huskies finally executing, even the penalties went in UW’s favor.

Everyone did their part.

Washington out played every team on their schedule so far, and when they don’t shoot themselves in the foot this is what happens.
