Some Curiosities Appear in Final AP College Football Poll

The AP Poll was out shortly after Georgia finished off the TCU Horned Frogs, 65-7.   Down at number 8 was the Washington Huskies.  However, a quick scan of the final ballots revealed many curiosities amongst the Pac-12 Teams.

The vast majority of the Washington’s votes put the Huskies at 8th in the country.  However, 7 pollsters ranked the Huskies at 7th and 10 had UW at 9th with another four pollsters had the Huskies at 10th.

Tampa Bay Times reporter, Matt Baker had 10-4 Utah at 8, a spot ahead of Washington’s 10-2 squad.  In fact, seven voters had the Utes ahead of UW.

Three writers had the Huskies the lowest in the poll at 12th.  One was a Texas Tech writer Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Dan Williams who had Utah at 9th, USC at 11th, and LSU writer Leah Vann who had USC and Utah at 9th and 10th, and Oregon at 13th.

Oregon’s ranking varied wildly between 8 and 18 but no pollster put the Ducks ahead of Washington.  Oregon finished at 15th.

Jon Wilner, who covers the Pac-12 pinned the Huskies at 8, then had 5 other conference teams ranked: Utah at 11; USC at 13, Oregon at 15, Oregon State at 17, and UCLA at 23.  His rating of 2.99 puts him at the biggest ranking outlier for the season.  His rating of 1.68 means his final tally was close to middle of the pack in terms of the accuracy of his final ballot.

Seattle Times’ Washington beat writer had the home team at 8.  Interestingly, he had the two opponents for the Pac-12 Conference Championship Game, Utah and USC at 15th and 16th respectively.  For the season Vorel’s ballot was far closer to the weekly tally, putting him at 12th most accurate.  However, his final ballot which drew a rating of 1.76, likely because of how lowly he rated the Utes and Trojans.
