Sights and sounds from day 11 of spring practice

It seems that the coaching staff is gearing up for more 11 on 11 drills than usual during Saturday’s open practice, as even the media got to sneak in a few plays of the live session, and while we got to sneak in a total of three plays of the live portion of practice. But there were quite a few things that can be taken away from those three plays…

  • Dylan Morris’ arm strength looks like it has improved a great deal. He took the first-team reps during this portion, and he got forced out of the pocket, and while rolling to his right, unloading the ball a good 50+ yards down the field towards Giles Jackson. While he ended up overthrowing Jackson, it definitely looks like Morris has improved his deep ball accuracy quite a bit.
  • On that play, he got forced out of the pocket by Jeremiah Martin, who got great pressure on Troy Fautanu, who was playing right tackle on the play. Martin displayed an excellent bull rush, and has come a long way since he arrived on campus. After practice, head coach Kalen DeBoer gave Martin a shoutout and highlighted the edge position as a whole as guys who have been “wreaking havoc” for the entirety of spring camp.
  • It’s going to be a huge year for another transfer, sophomore receiver Ja’Lynn Polk. Polk was the first read on the first two plays, the second of which required him to make an athletic grab for a first down. After practice, DeBoer singled out Polk as someone who’s made huge strides on the field, and has become an emotional leader off the field as well:

“He’s a guy that when we got here, his name was coming up a lot as someone who was an emotional leader,” DeBoer said. “If we have some vocal guys, he would be one of them. He was voted onto our Uni council in February, and you can tell by what he says that he isn’t all about himself, he’s a team-first guy. And when it comes to making plays on the football field, he’s been doing that more and more… he’s improved a lot since the beginning of practice. I remember where he was at in practices one and two, and now seeing him catch the ball, especially some of those tough ones, he’s coming through in those clutch moments.”

The Huskies certainly have an exciting receiving corps, and fans will see it on display at Saturday’s open practice.
